    Beehive

    Waste of my time!

In comedy, it is often said that men are funnier than women. I hate that utterly sexist phrase, as there are women out there who completely smash it into oblivion: Victoria Wood, Jo Brand, French and Saunders amongst others… the ladies of Beehive will not be added to this list.

I hated every second of this show. I was about to write 'comedy show', but that would be an insult to EVERYONE who makes a living making people laugh. With only five episodes and two hours of material it is not surprising that no one I've spoken to has heard of this show or indeed of anyone involved (Despite the fact one of them- Alice Lowe, was part of the Perrier Award-winning comedy show Garth Marenghi's Netherhead). Written and starring alongside Alice Lowe is Sarah Kendall, Clare Thompson and Barunka O'Shaughnessy. When you look at the shows these four have contributed or been a part of: Bo! in the USA, The Omad Djalli Show, Hyderdrive, The Mighty Boosh, Steve Coogan, Little Britain you can understand why they were given their own show. It's just a shame that none of them could create a show that would be worth watching.

In fact, I was kind of hoping that this show would have been a nice antidote to the drought of female comedy shows that has been since Smack The Pony. However, to compare Beehive to Smack the Pony (or indeed any sketch show) would be a slap in the face. Every sketch seems to revolve around sex and are as crude as Roy Chubby Brown on a quiet day. Those of you thinking: 'Well it's ok for him, but not for women!' sadly, I wish it was as cut and dry as that. It would be fine to watch these women talking about putting sculptures of penises on display, if the actual sketch was funny. But it's not. It wouldn't be funny if Chubby Brown did it either! Sketches that should have worked, such as a couple of extremely rude air hostesses, the Sex and the City cast being portrayed as their base stereotype suggests or all four as Russell Brand- a cockney tramp, simply don't. The scenes come thick and fast, but none of the jokes work. When the only purpose of a sketch show is to: setup, punchline, end and repeat, it is kind of sad at how many times this show fails to deliver.

Beehive is an abysmal show that I wouldn't recommend to anyone. It's such a shame that based on the quality (or lack of), TV producers may not want to take a chance on an all-female comedy show again. In the making of documentary, Sarah Kendall remarks 'Beehive is just sh*t that makes the four of us laugh'.

Well, I can't argue with the first part of your sentence!
