Photocinema Themed Festival Includes World Premiers and Magnum Hollywood Photography

Names involved include: Gregory Crewdson, Jonas Mekas, Hannah Starkey, Wim Wenders, Cindy Sherman, Zhang Xiao, Eric Baudelaire and William Eggleston

FORMAT09 - www.formatfestival.com - the international photography festival, will take place between 6 March and 5 April 2009 across Derby with QUAD, the city's new £11.2 million arts centre, as its hub. PHOTOCINEMA is the theme for this year's festival. Oscar nominated director David Lynch will take part together with some of the world's foremost photographers and cinematographers including FORMAT09 patrons Martin Parr and Brian Griffin. Amateur photographers from across the world can also have their work displayed via MobFORMAT, the Festival's unique Photocinema themed online gallery.

David Lynch will be showing a series of self selected stills from his acclaimed film Inland Empire as part of the PHOTOCINEMA-FOCUS Exhibition at QUAD

Martin Parr FORMAT09 patron and celebrated British documentary maker, photographer and photojournalist, will discuss the relationship between his film and photographic work.

An exhibition of Nicola Dove's Film Still Series shot on the sets of recent UK film productions, including Enduring Love staring Daniel Craig, 'Venus' staring Peter O'Toole and Brideshead Revisited staring Emma Thompson.

The Magnum Cinema Slideshow - unique for FORMAT09, a special curated selection of short films from Magnum in Motion. Magnum in Motion is an interactive manifestation of the spirit of Magnum Photos. Commissioned by Magnum in 2005, In Motion assembles web-based photo essays, effectively integrating Magnum's work into the sphere of online photojournalism. The slideshow explores the remarkable relationship between Magnum Photographers and the world of cinema. Relationships between Robert Capa and Ingrid Bergman; Dennis Stock and James Dean; Eve' Arnold and Marilyn Monroe are just some of those explored.

This Side of Paradise - fragments of an unfinished autobiography by Jonas Mekas. Mekas spent time with Jackie Kennedy and her family in the years following JFK's assassination and is the godfather of American Avante Garde cinema.

Director of Buena Vista Social Club, Paris Texas and Wings of Desire, Wim Wenders will exhibit the UK premiere of Once - a series of texts and photographs, taken on his travels and while location-scouting for his films. Part travel diary, part photo album, Once provides a fascinating insight into the universe that Wenders has created out of the hidden pieces of everyday life.

The UK premier of French artist Eric Baudelaire's Sugarwater - a 72 minute film exploring cylic eruptions and dissipations of a traumatic 'event', rendered as four discrete photographic images which depict the stages of a car being fire bombed on a Parisian street.

Internationally renowned US photographer Gregory Crewsdon has selected works from his Beneath the Roses series. His elaborately staged, surreal scenes of American homes and neighbourhoods suggest an extended narrative beyond the limitations of the photograph.

Steve Harris and Mel Bles self financed road trip across America resulted in the body of work Locations Project which documents the unique 1970's period of cinema known as 'New Hollywood', films such as The Exorcist, Jaws and Taxi Driver.

Brian Griffin, FORMAT09 patron and celebrated British photographer most recently immortalised the workers who transformed St Pancras International Station into an icon for the 21st Century in a series of photographs for Teamphoto: The People Who Built the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.

Mob FORMAT - providing the opportunity for everyone's photos to be part of the festival in a constantly evolving gallery and online exhibition, across the genres of Film Noir, Road Movie, Film Still, Photo Story, Film Star and Suspense.

    Curatorial focus
FORMAT09 explores the interface between the narratives of cinema and photography and its technical elements, colliding fact with fiction, history with fantasy. Works included in the festival will make reference to what has become known as cinematic. From Film Noir to Spaghetti Westerns there is no limit to the opportunity for artists to parody or play out the cinematic in their work. Likewise, photography is employed in cinema and directors can be inspired by photography when seeking locations or wide-shots. An entire film can even be based on the story told by a single photograph.

Louise Clements, FORMAT09 Curator and Quad Senior Curator, said: "FORMAT09 aims to explore the concept of Photocinema and the many ways in which the photographic and the cinematic collide within this genre. Photography is traditionally the 'still image', the ability to freeze and hold a moment in time, where cinema projects time through the movement of still images. Photocinema is the half-light that exists between the two narrative and technical sensibilities - juxtaposing fact with fiction, historicism with fantasy and reality with the cinematic - challenging our conventional notions of time and narrative. Format09 is an unmissable opportunity to see work by the leading international artists working within this field."

Brian Griffin, FORMAT09 patron said: "Photography has transformed the way in which we see the world and the way in which we share our experiences and is increasingly important in our digital age. Yet, as an art form, it is only now securing the recognition it deserves in this country. The FORMAT festival has been at the forefront of driving this interest and appreciation.

"FORMAT is successful because it brings together professionals, enthusiasts and the general public in a rich celebration and investigation of photography. It enables internationally significant work to be displayed, shared, the genre developed in new and exciting ways. This year's theme of photocinema is a particularly appealing novel way of exploring photography and demonstrates why FORMAT is fast becoming the photographic hub of the UK's cultural calendar. I look forward to another successful festival."

Alison Lloyd, Head of Visual Arts and Literature at Arts Council England, East Midlands said: "We look forward to welcoming the FORMAT Festival back this year. FORMAT's reputation as a leading nationally recognised festival is growing year on year."

    Derby's Photographic History
Derby has a rich heritage and enviable reputation for photographic innovation and excellence. The city was home to pioneering Victorian photographer Richard Keane. An associate of Fox Talbot, his work reportedly included commissions by the Royal Family. He was the recipient of 34 major awards and President Elect of the Photographic Convention of the United Kingdom. Derby was the first city in the UK to launch both Diploma and Masters courses in Creative Photography. This attracted prominent practitioners and lecturers and a vibrant photographic community developed in the city including John Blakemore and Paul Hill. Derby was home to the UK's first photography festival from 1991-97 and the legacy of its two dedicated photography galleries, Montage Gallery and Arbor Gallery is continued through the work of QUAD, the new centre for contemporary art and film.

    Format Photography Festival
Format Photography Festival has provided the main photographic provision in The East Midlands since 2005. Co-founded by Q Arts and Derby City Council, the Festival aimed to galvanise interest amongst practitioners and audiences and test the appetite for photographic activity in the city. FORMAT05 showed that photography was still widely regarded as Derby's key visual-arts strength and FORMAT06 took place the following year, achieving further national and international recognition. A decision to embed Format in the structure of QUAD will see the festival grow to new strengths this year with an impressive list of participating artists, galleries and organisations.
