Later With Jools Holland: First 15 Years

    7 / 10

    Introduction

Later…With Jools Holland is easily one of the most recognisable and best live music show on TV currently, surpassing even old BBC staple The Old Grey Whistle Test in terms of quality and variety of acts. Holland, ex-Squeeze and ex-Tube, gathers both mainstream and eclectic musical guests each week to perform a track or two. What is stunning about Later… is the ability to have the likes of R.E.M alongside Seasick Steve. This 2 dvd set features performances from the last fifteen years of the show, yes it's been that long…

    Overall

I like Later…, although I'm a bit of a late convert - only really catching on when I realised that he included the likes of Goldfrapp during their electro-stomp days (which weren't that long ago really). I've kind of missed out as well as there are some cracking performances of bands I've missed such as CCS, Hot Chip and Manu Chao.

There's no intro to this bar an initial opening sequence at the start of each disc. Each act is credited with name, track title and date of appearance but that's about it - no commentary or anything.

Oddly though, whilst both discs are packed with performances, it still feels like a bit of a missed opportunity. The DVD format will allow up to 3 hours of feature and each disc is only about two thirds full; there's fifteen years worth of performances that could have been used.

Some performances don't do it for me, some do, some I know, a lot I don't. Good showcase but could have done with a bit more filler.
