This is a fun film, taking the mickey out of 1950's B movie sci fi. My wife likes watching the Martians running about in their red underpants.
There is a good cast who are basically having fun, the effects are good and the ending is slightly silly.
There are a lot of in jokes which you may not get if you are new to sci-fi.
The sound is good but I haven't watched it all through since buying my Dolby Digital kit, picture is good, the reds are well handled.
The story isn't bad but I think that you would only watch it every 6 months to a year - it is definately a film you need to be in the mood for to repeat watch after first watching, I watched it twice through in the first week, the film isn't too long, unlike some.
I suggest drinking while watching, and it is a good demo disc. Buy it for the mickey take story line, good effects, overall quality, and to watch big names ham it up. Don't buy it if you only like serious films, or if you dislike Tom Jones.
Mars Attacks is one of my favourite films, the characters are great! The CG is very good for 1996, and puts modern blockbusters to shame (e.g. Spiderman).
The Disc has a great 5.1 soundtrack with a detailed 2.35:1 picture.
The extras are very dissapointing, seeing as the film has alot of hollywood stars, there must of been some behind the scenes footage captured. What you get isn't to bad, the music only audio track is a good addition and the production notes are interesting.
