A very good anti-cloning action thriller. It has everything - a good script, top notch action, thrills and even a good sense of humor.
The video transfer is excellent. There are no compression signs to be seen at all and the colors are very clear. The numerous dark scenes are rendered perfectly. The special effects are done very nice as well.
The DD 5.1 soundtrack is great. The surrounds are used throughout the movie and the soundtrack itself is very aggressive (which is a good thing for action thrillers).
The menus are all animated with sound.
The extras include a commentary with an isolated score track and some commercials from the movie itself. Unfortunately, there is no featurette about how the special effects were created.
Bottom line - a good action thriller which topic is extremely relevant nowadays.
"The Sixth Day" revisited - November 2007
*********************************************
It's been over six and a half years since I first watched and reviewed this movie.
Upon watching it for the 2nd time, during a cool Saturday morning I can say it still kept me at the edge of my seat.
It simply has a lot to offer - thrills, chills, some laughs, a lot of moral and Arnold's pathetic (yet usual) performance.
My original mark for the extras was a mare 6, but given the fact that this disc is SO poor on extras, it'll have to go. 5 it is, then.
Bottom line - still not outdated, even six and a half years into the future. Enjoy! ![]()
Schwarzenegger's career has been a bit rocky of late, and this film is neither a help nor a hinderance to his prospects. 6th Day is reminiscent of most early '90s action films and had the opportunity to be a fun-filled rollercoaster ride. The fly in the ointment however, is a rather serious subject matter. Cloning will always be a big issue due to technological advancements, and this was never going to be taken lightly by any Director.
The resulting movie is an uneasy mixture of heroic cliches and potentially thought provoking dramatics.
It's sporadically enjoyable and the action is great, but any designs it might have had on being a weighty piece of cinema are squashed by Arnie's presence. Conversely, if the story was tailored more to the typical entertainment fare, this really could have took off and re-established it's star as the commodity he once was. To be fair, It very nearly achieves this goal. The comedic/light hearted moments are certainly well staged, it's just that the tone is noticeably inconsistent (they can't have it both ways!).
The disc itself is surprisingly low on extras after seeing the misleadingly big list on the back cover, as only the commentary by Trevor Rabin (isolated score) is worth mentioning. The A/V quality is everything you'd expect from a film this new, but this is another R1 DVD without a DTS soundtrack (why?).
So, is it worth bothering with? probably, but just be warned that it's quarter of an hour longer than necessary and has a fairly uncommited ending. There's still plenty here to get excited about, it's the big man back on some sort of form, but a clearer vision would have helped. Devout Arnie fans will be happy enough and glad to put End of Days behind them.
I went into this movie not expecting much. From the opening scenes it seems like a rehash of Arnold's own TOTAL RECALL and in some parts it is. But upon futher viewing I found it to be a good, not great, but good vehicle for Arnold that reminds me of his earlier efforts. Presented in a 2.35:1 letterboxed format the DVD features a good video transfer and a great DD 5.1 soundtrack with sound effects that seems to fill the rear channels. The drawbacks are the lack of any decent features which includes an isolated audio commentary, a mock infomerical, a mock TV spot and theatrical trialer. I'm not into extra material on newer movies so I'm not complaining. Overall, not a bad disc.
