Synopsis:
Sammy Going South is a rugged youngster's-eye-view adventure set in South Africa. 10-year-old orphan Sammy (Fergus McClelland), who resides in Port Said, tries to locate his only relative, who lives 5000 miles away across the desert in Durban. After the death of his first guide, an erstwhile peddler, Sammy is rescued by a wealthy tourist (Constance Cummings). Not anxious to return to Port Said, Sammy escapes his benefactress and links up with a crafty old hunter/diamond smuggler (Edward G. Robinson), whose life is saved by the boy. When the police search for Sammy, they arrest the old man, who has been a fugitive for years. When Sammy is finally united with his Aunt (Zena Walker), he learns that the old smuggler has willed him his fortune.

We have an exclusive screening of this film at Cornerhouse, Manchester as part of the Family Friendly Film Festival this Sunday, 12noon, with an intro from a very special guest - Fergus McClelland (Sammy!)!!
He says:
"I went off to Africa a happy 11 year old child and returned 6 months later as a young man, buried in experiences with some of the best actors, and technicians of film in the world. Working with Alexander MacKendrick was amazing. Here was one of the most famous directors there was showing me how to perform. Behind the scenes I got to know Harry H. Corbett the star of Steptoe And Son and Edward G. Robinson in a way you don't from reading Hello magazine. The film inspired Lord Lloyd Webber and Steven Spielberg at the start of their careers. On Sunday, I will be sharing some of the exciting inside stories of what REALLY happens on a film set, the arguments, the disasters and finally the triumphs as the whole vision comes together into something that makes sense and carries a powerful message to an audience."
