Did not bother this year, as mine usually never make it though alive
Just sticked two quid on the Lottery instead.
A leg on each corner and which end the hay goes.
Sums up my knowledge of Gee Gees.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

A bit like how my bets summed up mine. :) I think I made the mistake of using the BBC tips page last year too.
Can anyone answer me why horses get put down sometimes when they fall at a fence? Are they the only animals that can't survive a broken leg? Or is it some other reason?

I was always under the impression that it was because they bred as racing horses ............. I'll just get me coat.

Horses' legs are vastly different from ours, and what we humans consider a (moderately) trivial matter such as a broken legs is a completely different kettle of halibut for a gee-gee. Each leg has to support about 250lbs, and horses can't be conditioned to either put the weight on the other three legs, or stand still long enough for the leg to heal. Horses can't use crutches, and you can't suspend a horse using slings. They need to move or they'll go insane, plus there's the possibility of bedsores, and that's how Superman died
Also, there's no muscle below the knee/hock, meaning there's no blood supply. If the break tears the animal's skin, the risk of infection (with nothing to counter it) is exponentially higher
As dkuk says, these things are bred as racehorses, losing the ability to run, or be ridden rather coldheartedly means they serve no purpose, other than to eat, and for a money-manking enterprise such as horse-racing, ain't nobody got time for that
Here's a good article
