Aarrghh! I HATE Microsoft!!!

RJS (undefined) posted this on Wednesday, 4th May 2016, 17:38

My desktop PC runs Windows 7 Home Premium, just stuck another 16GB of RAM in it, and it's not showing up. Why? Because Home Premium I discover only supports 16GB.

I can't use Windows Anytime Upgrade to upgrade it to Professional because Microsoft have decided to close that down some time ago.

Now left with the horrible thought of buying a dodgy COA key off ebay, never knowing if it'll deactive itself.

Do you need to be on Windows 7? Would updating to 10 let you use the 32gb?

I take it back Chris, the moment I put on a sadface and shutdown my PC, it suddenly said it was upgrading (where it would normally say installing updates). Then when I booted it up, it did a bit more, restarted and now it's gone Pro!

(enemy, I hate Windows 10! I am never going beyond 7 again, it's why I bought a Macbook!)

Glad you got sorted. I quite like 10 but I only use the PC for gaming. The ads in the start menu are a pass off mind.

I'd consider it (if I was 100% sure everything I used on 7 worked on 10) if they brought back the Aero interface. But that's never going to happen. :)

As things stand, I feel like I lose a UI that pleases my eyes and have it replaced with an eyesore, and I get nothing else to make up for it. Plus I had so much trouble on my laptop getting bluetooth to my headset working reliably, it was fine if I just paired it with that but the moment I wanted to use it on my iPad getting it back on the laptop was a nightmare.

They just get so much of the basic experience wrong, maybe in part this isn't their fault because they are so reliant on third party drivers, but still this is 2016 and my 32 year old ZX Spectrum boots faster.

One funny thing though, the command key on my Macbook constantly throws me, as do a few other keys in different places like the hash key. I keep having to stop and think which machine I'm using to hit the right ones. :)

Oddly I've had nothing but good experiences with 10. My PCs boot in seconds (all SSDs mind you) and I've not experienced any compatibility issues. With that said, all of my systems were under a year old when I upgraded, but I have installed it on machines over three years without issue. I don't really use the start menu and I don't mind the interface - I access most things through keyboard shortcuts or the search function. I quite like it...
