Coming to the end.

Now can't get iplayer to work on my PC.
Won't play cos Java needs updating and Java wont update because it needs a newer version of windows than XP.

iPlayer doesn't use Java, it uses Flash. And it runs fine in Firefox which disables Java plugins by default.

If the problem is actually Flash needs updating, then try Chrome, it has Flash built in.

It's actually Java and Flash but thanks for the tip Chrome does work.

How's that though?
Does the player in Chrome not need updating as well?

Just on the new PC front any views on AMD v Intel and any pointers for an idiots guide to the difference.
What I think I'm looking for is a decent motherboard/processor combination and plenty of scope to upgrade. Which would seem to be the cheapest way into the brave new world of Win 10.

Intel is better at the moment. Still running XP? Eeek!

There's a lot of police and government PCs still running it as well though they've stumped up a lot of our dosh to extended the support from Microsoft.

No problems from running it so far (says he clutching the wooden desk and checking the health of his black cat)

There are - but are they all, for example, accessing the internet and online banking?  Are you...??....
Running XP in an enclosed network is very different - as is running it when you have paid M$ a fortune for updates/fixes if required..

if you want windows 10 for free you could sign up to the insider program and get pre release version, although that does mean you'll be a guinea pig on it for ever ;)

you could then buy a PC/barebones/mobo bundle from say Novatech where you're not forced to buy an OS when you buy the machine, and since you can more or less choose off the shelf components, you could upgrade later. that's maybe not the cheapest route though for the PC.

Dell are the company we all love to hate but are a sensible option for many ppl, prices are v competitive, and the ones we have at work nowadays are pretty good. Also I'm not sure if this is because we have the more expensive work stations, but the parts are standard now, in the old days some of the mobos had strange connections for PSUs etc :(

If you bought a cheap Dell however upgrade options may be limited due to case, much like when I bought a Mesh years ago, the actual PC and everything was fine, all standard components, however the case was too small when I wanted to upgrade the graphics card a year or so after purchase, so had to buy case, and PSU, in hindsight should have paid the extra few quid for larger case when I bought it in customise your PC.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Full size tower case is the only option I'm considering to allow space for expansion.
Dell? Probably not. Although the machine I'm using now is a Dell and has been working pretty well for years the problems I had when I first purchased it put me off them for life.

They're a great company if you buy something and it works but anything wrong, particularly if it turns up not as ordered, is an absolute nightmare. Trying to speak to anyone to get anything sorted is nigh on impossible involving call centre idiots working from flow charts, unable to understand the simplest request that falls outside the next step listed. Then having to book a time for people to ring you back which doesn't happen.

I won't be able to do anything but look for a couple of weeks or so but it'll probably be the like of a main supplier, PC World, Argos, maybe Amazon who have a better returns policy. Ebuyer's a possibility but I had a similar problem to the Dell one with them but not quite as bad.

Flash is built into Chrome, and updated by Google everytime Chrome updates, it doesn't require any Flash plugin to be installed externally.

You can apparently trick XP into still getting updates, but I'm not sure I would recommend it:
http://www.zdnet.com/article/registry-hack-enables-continued-updates-for-windows-xp/

I still run one XP machine, because a piece of hardware it uses didn't even get 64bit drivers let alone Vista drivers. As long as you run still-supported antirivus and browser, and sit behind a NAT (which you will do if you have any sort of adsl/cable modem with more than one port on it), and don't install any other software from any source you don't 100% trust (so spotify would be ok, but some shareware off download.com maybe not) you are probably still reasonably safe.

Yes I can tick all those boxes and I'm paranoid about installing stuff and clicking on links anyway.
I still need to get my act together and upgrade though. As long as I've got the large case any cards and gubbins that are being put inside it will largely go unnoticed.
