Quick Phishing question

Snaps (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 6th September 2014, 15:59

In Thunderbird is clicking on show remote content in the preview window equivalent to being dumb enough to clicking on links within the actual email?

I rather hope it isn't.

The remote content is anything in the email that is hosted on other servers on the internet, for example, image files which would take up a lot of bandwidth when sending mass emails out.

Allowing remote content simply allows the images etc to load, much like a web page. It could be possible to send malicious content in this manner, so you should allow remote content for only the addresses you trust.

Hope that makes sense.

Showing remote content shouldn't expose you to malicious files like clicking on links, Thunderbird should protect you from that. But if it's spam (or marketing) it can be (and probably is being) used to track that you viewed the email.

So I wouldn't do it unless you trust the source, unless you just want more of the same.

Not that most spammers even care if you opened it or not to spam you again, once you're on their list...

What I don't understand is it's a donotreply email address (Halifax), looks perfectly genuine and is only telling me I have updated my preferences to online statements. for two accounts and lists the last four digits of those accounts.
Problem is the only thing I have with the Halifax is a mortgage.

The only clickable links are way down the page in all the bumf for security and banking terms and those are so small you'd miss them.

I think I'm going to ring the Halifax tomorrow just to check someone's not nicking my ID.

Panic over. It's genuine.
My darling son, who never uses the desktop, was on his account and put the main email in for contact.
