Apple Mac Many Many questions

mbilko (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 2nd September 2014, 08:50

Ok so laptop is completely doing my nut in, bought second hand one from ebay with windows 8 and its ok but sooooo slow.....specs are ok, good graphics card etc but really considering an apple now but have loads of q's (probably add some later as sure I wont remember them all here)

Specs always seem underpowered to me but see something called turboboost or something? whats the deal with that, also is the ssd drive really that much faster?

Games, basically I play civ 5 and fm14 at moment, does steam run on macs? sure I saw pc and mac on fm13 when I bought the disc last year.

As most of you know I travel and download a lot so smaller lighter laptop appeals to me but can I still use the likes of vuze on mac and I think I am right in assuming my current external harddrives wont work on apple and I will have to buy new ones?

I am looking at 2nd hand currently mainly because of price tbh, would u suggest the MacBook pro or the air, pro is much more expensive it seems long term is it worth the extra. I assume the air machines have no dvd player which is not a problem as you can buy an external one for the machines?

Last but most important, obviously everyone is different but is it much more difficult to get along with the mac after using windows all your life? that's my main concern tbh, as much as I hate windows 8 I still have half a clue what im doing with it.

Any other details you think might be helpful before I decide would be much appreciated.

Yes, Steam runs on Macs, though not all Steam games have Mac or Linux versions. FM14 and Civ 5 list Mac and Linux on the store pages so I'm guessing they run on Macs!

How much do you hate change? If you really hate change you'll have a problem, if you just hate Windows 8 you should be okay.

Rob looking at the pro and the air, any reason for the price difference? Am a bit baffled and don't want to rush into a buy and kick myself..

I'm no expert, I thought the air was thinner and lighter?

From a quick google, the pro has a retina display and more RAM.

guessing with the HDD it would be heavier like windows laptop? processor don't seem much difference and on ebay most seem to be 4gb memory. with the pro could I add an sdd drive and take out the dvd player? If so any idea of ball park cost?

I believe people use Boot Camp for that, if you want to google.
