Ubuntu 14.04 Out Now!

Get it while it's hot! :D

Looks like a great release. As ever I'll be waiting for Linux Mint for myself, but the missus will be going Ubuntu on the laptop. :)

just upgraded this laptop online from lubuntu 13.10 to 14.04, seems to have worked, so far so good :) Normally use win 7 on it now though, just seems a it more stable, things like facebook in chrome, youtube and apps like spotify just work better :(

Hi Admars. Long time since we did the Linux thing I think!

The new Mint 17 RC is out as of yesterday. I think I'll take the plunge with it, as the last RC worked fine for me from the get-go, and I've been using it as my main OS since without any issue.

I'll be putting Lubuntu on my dad's ancient desktop soon too. Tried the last version and it seemed to run really well. He's not that demanding, as long as Firefox works we're good really. Just as well as the thing is so old now. I'm amazed it still works! It's a Sempron 2200+ (1.5Ghz) with Nvidia 6600 and 768Mb RAM.

Final Mint 17 editions released today. :)  MATE edition here.

Mint 17 Cinnamon has been running great guns for me since the RC. One or two bugs but they are fixed now and no problems at all.

installed ubuntu on the amd today, not sure how long it will stay ;) forgot how annoying the defautl setup of the close minimise etc being on the "wrong" side is, and it trying to do an Apple style menu at the top. also still find it confusing trying to open an app that isn't on the left bar thing.

guess I could get used to it, but I rarely use this pc now so probably won't :)

on the plus side, it did install pretty quickly, and does seem to work, found everything ok, as you would expect these days. seems pretty quick as well which is nice on such an old pc

a little while ago, I put mint debian mate on an old laptop, works ok, apart from slight screen tearing which normally is ok, but some vids gets v annoying.

So I tried Mint xfce  same issue, so out of curiosity tried Kubuntu 17.04 (mint is on previous version still) and the display issues are as good as windows.

the strange thing is the graphics card is an intel hd 3000 so a fairly bog standard one where the standard intel default ones should have been in all 3 distros!

I haven't checked the kernel I'm using in latest Kubuntu, so maybe that's the difference.

However Kubuntu as a whole isn't endearing itself to me, silly things like why is it single click to open things, and then having to google how to make it "normal" double click :(

Dolphin just isn't as nice a file manager as well, anything else, i could probably spend a day getting it to be like nautilus, nemo, pcmanfm etc etc, but life's too short ;) it's not just navigation but little things liek right click extraxt on a zip aren't there.

I remember when kde 4 was new and testing, and thinking it had great potential, it still seems half baked, or very insular, maybe elitist kde ppl who only know kde still like it over everything else, but it's not very welcoming.

it seems slow, this laptop is a few years old, but takes ages from login to be usable etc.

also, doesn't come with synaptic and the default program installer is very slow, and has crashed on me a few times :( had to install thunderbird as well! At least firefox comes with it now ;)

i'll either install lubuntu, or add lxde i think.

Ubuntu 17.10 is out. :)

Big changes this time that you are no doubt aware of. I'd previously tried the beta a few weeks ago and didn't like it much, but what a difference a few weeks makes. Installed the final release and very much enjoying it indeed. Not perfect, but especially if you're a Gnome 3 fan like me anyway you'll like it. Mostly I like the fact that I haven't had to do much to tailor it. Easy to install as Ubuntu always is, and easy to just grab the programs I like and that's it really.

Couple of bugs - text busting in through the boot splash I don't like. Had a bit of trouble with snaps too, but nothing killer. Very solid place to build 18.04 and beyond from I think.

Thanks from: admars
