I`d hoped to pick one up when the prices dropped after Boxing Day, but they haven`t.

I think you may have to wait until MS throw in the towel, however they may do what they did with the original XBox which was trounced by the PS2, and sell them off cheap when V2 comes out.

Still, it might not be that far away:

While it does have drawbacks just like anything else, Microsoft’s (MSFT) Surface is a great slate for those looking for a fresh new take on the modern tablet. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like very many people were looking for a fresh new take on the modern tablet this holiday season.

Surface Pro reviews:

Gizmodo 3/5:

Quote:
Most pressing, though, are all the ways that people looking for the perfect laptop/tablet hybrid can’t use it like a laptop. The keyboard covers only work on flat surfaces; it’s pretty bulky as a tablet even though it’s well built; the trackpads are barely usable anywhere.

Engadget:

We're still completely enraptured by the idea of a full-featured device that can properly straddle the disparate domains of lean-forward productivity and lean-back idleness. Sadly, we're still searching for the perfect device and OS combo that not only manages both tasks, but excels at them. The Surface Pro comes about as close as we've yet experienced, but it's still compromised at both angles of attack. When trying to be productive, we wished we had a proper laptop and, when relaxing on the couch, we wished we had a more finger-friendly desktop interface -- though more native Windows 8 apps might solve the problem by keeping us from having to even go there.

http://www.tweaktown.com/news/29149/microsoft-surface-tablets-sold-worse-than-expected/index.html

Quote:
According to people knowledgeable about Microsoft's sales, the company has reportedly only sold around 1.5 million Surface devices, meaning Surface RT and Surface Pro sales combined.

And...

Quote:
Bloomberg reports that only about 400,000 Surface Pro units and just over one million Surface RT tablets have been sold. This is in stark contrast to Microsoft's expectations which had the company moving two million Surface RT tablets in December alone. The company ordered around three million, so there is quite a bit of stock left.

Mind you, didn't the first xbox sell poorly? The second one clearly beat Playstation (even if Wii beat them both).

i just wouldnt touch the RT version...  really dont see the point of it :/  would love the "proper" surface pro, but it would have to be at least half its current price.

I finally succumbed and bought myself a Dell XPS 10 which was on special offer a while back - about the same price as the Surface, but with 64Gb instead of 32. It`s almost my dream tablet but not quite - there`s a little too much Apple-style nannying about available apps and having to sign into a Microsoft account. I can`t do my email on it for that reason.

At the moment I think Android tablets are the most user friendly, followed by Windows RT and iOS kit lagging at the back.

Microsoft isn't giving up on the Surface, apparently they are announcing Surface 2 on 23rd September. Isn't Apple's keynote speech before then?

I'd have thought if the Surface specs and price were going to wipe the floor with the iPad, they'd announce it before Apple so the press all go on about how the new iPad isn't as good.

If it is better and they announce it so soon after, everyone else is going to be already buying iPads and not caring.

Quote:
Microsoft’s Surface range of tablets has posted its worst single quarter loss since its launch leaving analysts to question whether the fledgling slate is still a viable option for the company.

Two separate sets of figures show that the Surface line of slates ended up posting negative gross margins for the final quarter of FY2014 and the experiment has ended up costing Microsoft $1.73 billion since it first launched.
