Setting up static IP address (Sky broadband)

1mills (Elite) posted this on Monday, 23rd February 2009, 13:21

Trying to set up static IP address at the moment so that I can forward the ports for Utorrent.

Basically I`ve gone through the motions of "ipconfig/all" in dos and taken down the relevant information then tried to set it up.

Basically this is what I`m putting in

IP address: 192.168.0.6
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1

Name servers: 90.207.238.97
90.207.238.99

I`ve taken the name servers from in the routers settings as they came up as the same as IP address in the dos info.

As soon as I put these settings in and assign an IP address, the internet dies.

I`ve rang Sky, as all guides etc say to get the name servers off them if having problems. Basically they`ve asked me why I want them and then said you can`t change anything in the router anyway and there is no way to get a static ip address when your on Sky broadband.

Are they chatting s***? Or if they aren`t, are there any workarounds that can be done?

Basically I`m only getting speeds of about 50kb/s tops and we`ve got a good connection here, so should be on more like 10times that. :(

The easiest way to do it is to set the router DHCP server so that it always assigns the same IP to the pc. Then continue to use DHCP on the pc, this avoids any problems if Sky change their DNS IPs

Then just configure the port forwarding on the router.

I am not at home so I can`t pull up the relevant screens, but it should be within the LAN Setup or DHCP Setup sections. May be labelled as IP reservation...

Which Sky router do you have?

The Sky router can act as a dhcp server and you can tell it to always assign the same IP address to a PC by entering it`s MAC address. The router will then still provide all the other settings (such as DNS) as well.

Head over to SkyUser, they always have a ton of info on their forum.

Cheers for the information.

I have tried it and hasn`t worked when I`ve tried to do the port forward, so something is still going wrong. Oh well, another problem to now solve. :/

I haven`t bothered with any port forwarding.
I used to have to do it, but it seems that the NAT seems to all work it out itself for inbound flow now.

I think if the software/machine initialises the connection through the router its automatically allowing the incoming connections on that port without having to define the service (port) and forward to a defined IP address.

Of course, I don`t have a Sky router (I use the Netgear DG834G) and I also use Transmission (on the Mac) so really its of no help to you....I`ll get me coat. :D

I believe my Sky router is one of those.

I would definitely spend some time on the SkyUser forum (if you can drag yourself away from this renowned establishment ;) ) as they have tons of information about such things.
