PLEASE HELP:- How do you set up LINKSYS wireless router with Talk Talk?

Harry_Potter (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 11th November 2006, 21:45

Hi All,

In desperate need of some help.

Purchased the LINKSYS WAG54GS deal from PC World for £55

What I am looking to do ...
1. Connect only wirleess ASDL router to phoneline
2. Connect deskstop from different room via a wireless adaptor
3. Connect tablet PC which is wireless

I want to be able to connect to the router via either computer without hard wiring to the router.

Is this possible? I`m using talk talk. Can get the deskstop to recognise router, but can`t do much else. How the hell do I load the internet remotely?

Its driving me mad!! >:(

I thought that the pc world linksys was for cable broadband?

I`m on talktalk and have just set up a wireless router. Let me think about it and get back to you (bit late now - brain not fully functional)

Hi

before you do anything, make sure that you have Talk Talk`s DNS server addresses.

for talk talk these are:-

Primary 62.24.128.17
Secondary 62.24.128.18

the instructions below are lifted directly from talk talk`s website - it refers to Belkin routers
so just replace any reference to belkin with linksys, e.g. router Ip address etc.

When you`ve bought all the equipment you need and given all your computers a wireless connection, it`s time to connect your wireless modem/router. There are three main parts to this process:

Connecting the modem/router to your telephone line.
Connecting the modem/router wirelessly to one of your computers.
Setting up the modem/router for your internet connection.
We`ve assumed throughout this guide that you`re using a Belkin ADSL modem/router, a TalkTalk broadband connection and a computer running Windows XP, although the instructions can be adapted for most other equipment.

Connecting to your telephone line
If you`re already using a wired broadband modem, switch it off and unplug the power supply.

Place your new modem/router next to your old modem (or wherever you want to use it).

Disconnect the ADSL cable from the old modem. (This is the cable that connects to your telephone line). Plug it into the ADSL socket on the new modem/router.

Unplug the Ethernet cable from your old modem. If you want to use a cable to link one of your computers to the modem/router, plug the Ethernet cable into one of the LAN sockets on your new modem/router.

Connect the power adaptor to your new modem/router. It may take around a minute before all the indicators on the front light up.

The telephone symbol on the modem/router should be showing. If you`ve connected a computer using an Ethernet cable, one of the computer symbols will also be showing.

Connecting wirelessly to your computers
The next stage involves connecting one of your computers to the modem/router.

If you`re doing this with an Ethernet cable, you simply plug one end into your computer and the other end into the modem/router. Alternatively, with a wireless connection, activate the wireless connection on your computer or laptop and connect to the Belkin 54G option. (This will be called something different if you`re using a different brand of modem/router).

The PWR (Power) and SYN (synchronised with the telephone exchange) lights should show. You`ll also see a LAN (fixed network) or WLAN (wireless network) light, depending on the connection you`re using.

On your computer, click Start followed by Run. Now type cmd and press OK.

A black box known as a `DOS prompt` will appear on-screen. Type ipconfig and press the Enter key.

You`ll be shown the technical information for your modem/router. Look for the section that`s headed Local Area Connection if you`re using an Ethernet cable or Wireless Network Connection if you`re connecting wirelessly.

The IP Address should start with 192.168.2. and the Default Gateway should be 192.168.2.1. If you can see these numbers, you`re ready to set up your connection.

If you are shown a different set of numbers, you`re not connected to your Belkin modem/router. To connect, click Start and then click Control Panel. Now select Network Connections. (On some computers you may need to choose Dial-Up and Internet connections followed by Network).

If you`re using a wired connection, use the right-hand mouse button to click Local Area Connection, then click Properties. If you`re using a wireless connection, right-click on Wireless Network Connection and choose Properties.

Now click Internet protocol TCP/IP followed by Properties. The options to Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically should be selected. When you`ve checked this - and selected the options if necessary - click OK.

You should now be able to start at the beginning of this process and connect to the modem/router.

TalkTalk Tips:
If you want to double-check that you`re connected to the modem/router, click Start followed by Run, then type cmd and press OK. When the black `DOS prompt` box appears, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press the Enter key.

This will check the connection by sending four short test signals to the modem/router. The results will be shown on-screen: if everything`s ok your computer should show that it`s received four replies (4 `packets` of data sent and 4 packets received).

Setting up your wireless broadband connection
Once your computer is `talking` to your modem/router, it`s time to set up your broadband connection. This is done by visiting a special web page.

Open Internet Explorer (or your chosen web browser program) and type 192.168.2.1 in the Address box at the top of the page. Press Enter.

You`ll be shown a special Belkin page. Don`t enter a password, just click Submit.

Now click Connection Type at the left-hand side of the page. Choose PPPoA, then click Next.

You now need to enter the settings for your broadband service. For TalkTalk you`ll need:

Username: Your TalkTalk username.
Password: Your TalkTalk password.
VPI/VCI: Type 0 in the first box and 38 in the second box.
Encapsulation: Set this to VC-MUX.
Dial on demand: Leave this box empty.
Idle Time (Minute): Set this to 0.
Use Static IP Address: Leave this box empty.

When you`ve entered this information, click Next and then click Apply Changes.

You`ll now see the page for DNS settings. Make sure that Automatic from ISP is selected, then click Apply Changes. The page will reappear; click Home in the bar at the top of the screen when this happens.

Finally, you`ll be shown a Status page. Click Connect on the right-hand side of the page. The Internet Status at the top right-hand corner of the page will change to Connected.

That`s it! You could start browsing the web now - but we reckon you should take a few minutes to sort out your online security first.

for security settings, choose WPA-TKIP (if the adaptor supports it) rather than WEP
as it`s much harder to crack.

If you dont really know what you are doing, it is ALWAYS better to do the initial router set up via a network cable rather than wireless.

Wireless just causes an extra headache. Once you have established an internet connection, the next thing to do is sort the wireless.

.

Seconded.

You also really need to read the manual for your particular router - surely it will have straightforward instructions on setting it up?

Disregard what I said before - I can see it is an adsl modem (I was going by the the pcworld ad on the telly which shows a cable modem)

the linksys cable router i got from tesco`s some moons ago, wouldn`t let you do the initial setup at all from a wireless connection, it HAD to be done via cable...
