PC problem

Lizard (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 16th March 2004, 10:58

Hi
When I start my computer and go into my user area it seems to take 10-15 mins for any of the programs to start working properly. If I try to close them I just get the `this program is not responding` message. They remain open even after selecting to `end now` but are still not responding. Eventually they all start responding and everything is fine. I havnt got a clue why this happens. I use windows xp and the same problem occurs for all the other users.

Can anybody help?

What is the specification of your PC?

What have you got loading at start-up?

click Start > Run > type msconfig > un-tick everything (except your anti-virus and firewall), reboot PC then see how it goes. You can go back and re-tick the boxes whenever you want/need to.

Have you got updated anti-spyware software?

tried what you suggested and the programs seem to be responding a bit quicker but there still is a delay of a few minutes.

Its a fairly new pc: 2.6 ghz, 512 ram

I have ad-aware which i believe is anti-spyware

cheers for the help mate but have you got any other suggestions?

Hmm... my PC is 2.4ghz, 256mb ram and it`s ready to rock in about 28 seconds... it`s got to be something simple...

When did you last run scan-disk and de-frag?

When did the problem start? Does using System Restore to skip back to before the problem help it?

Kat

Just an off chance, but you haven`t recently installed a game called Operation Flashpoint by any chance?

I had a very similar problem when I got this PC a few months ago, booted in no time, then all of a sudden was taking up to 5 mins to boot...hung on the XP screen for ages.

I never got to the bottom of it, but it was something to do with this game, apparently its older than it looks, and is patched up to the eyeballs to keep it current. I was getting crashed to desktop too when trying to play it. Uninstaled it, and problem has gone.

So not sure what it was, but it was obviously something to do with the game, and the PC far exceeded the recommended rquirements for the game.

Mark. :)

My computer went in for repair recently (full of viruses - norton now installed) and when it came back it worked perfectly. Then a few days later this problem started occuring. Ive tried restoring it to the day it was returned but the problem is still there.

Ive ran scan-disk and de-frag both today and there have been no changes.

Ive never had that game so it cant be that and I havnt installed any games recently either.
