Anyone wanna do some Geeky benchmarking?

sj (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 17th September 2003, 17:18

There`s a utility at www.aquamark3.com for benchmarking your PC and giving a score at the end. Some really good graphics.
It`s a 60 odd MB file so you`ll need broadband AND I think you`ve may need to be running DirectX 9 but am not sure. It can test DX 9 anyway.
Quite a good site if you`re into PC gaming/graphics cards etc..
I downloaded from a mirror that was quite quick too.
Gives your broadband connection something to do anyway ;)

I got a score of
GFX 1890
CPU 3715
Total : 15,073.

Think it`s fairly average - I`ve only got a GF4 Ti4200.
Let`s see..

I got 7,000-ish, which is pathetic considering i have Ti 4200 and Athlon 2600XP. Other people with similar setups are getting 10,000-20,000 points. It`s not fair I tell ya!!!!

Something doesn`t sound right there..
Got anything running sapping all your CPU??

Don`t know. I`ll run it again without any unneeded services. Do the driver settings make any difference, (eg, I had Quincunx anti-aliasing running and Anisotropic Filtering set to 8x)? I thought it wasn`t right though, because I have the Ti4200 overclocked to 260/520Mhz and the machine is only a few weeks old.

I`ve got a Radeon 9500Pro and a 0071nolhtA[at].zHM0012

I get 32,000 odd in this benchmark, really need a directx9 card to be competetive.

Gareth, set AA and Ansio to application and let aquamark take care of it, i`m sure it uses something like 4x Ansio anyway - without what you are adding in the control panel of the graphics drivers.

Yes!!!!!!!! I set them both to application controlled and my score went up to 14,365. Average framerate was still only around 17fps though.

A 1700 running at 2100?
That is geeky ;)

Well I finally bought myself a new GFX card and its running fine...

About to do the benchmark thing - any advice how to overclock my new card then? Or do I not need to do it; I don`t really understand all the overclocking thing - is it worth it and is it dangerous to the card?

Its a Radeon 9800 Pro by the way.

I certainly wouldn`t be buying a new card and overclocking it straight away.
See if you`re happy. I`m sure you will be.

Ben, you got the radeon in the end, good stuff. You won`t regret it one bit, unlike all the GeForceFX5900 Ultra owners that are just realising that they have been ripped of.
