New Telly question

Snaps (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 21st November 2015, 16:42

I hope this isn't a daft question.
When buying a TV these days is there any plus or minus in getting a smart TV or a dumb one with the smarts in a Blu ray player which is also needed.

I find myself way behind the curve with TV tech these days and need to catch up.

Smart TVs are pretty much standard the higher spec that you go. But some companies, especially Panasonic, don't bother supporting Smart tech on older TVs and other devices, so as the years pass, the apps fall off one by one.

Best to get the TV you want, and just buy a Roku or other smart box to hook up to the Internet, and get the smart apps that way.

I agree with JT - Find the TV you like for screen/bevel/looks and if it has SMART functions then it's a bonus.
My TV is 18 months old now and SMART - but it doesn't have ITV player nor All4 which I was told at the time it would probably get updates to do. It hasn't. So I have a NOW TV box plugged in for those.

The best feature is the share facility (beaming my laptop and hard drive to it to watch films/TV), but even if the TV you finally choose doesn't have that you can just plug in a Chromecast!

I have a smart TV, it's useful for playing things via DLNA, which I do quite regularly. I can do that with the blu-ray player as well, but it's easier not to have to turn that on every time.

For iPlayer I prefer using the Amazon TV because it's a lot quicker.

Thanks for the advice folks I think just a decent HD flat screen will be the way to go then and anything else as an add on. The Amazon Fire stick seem a reasonable option on a quick look round.
We've amassed a load of Tesco points which we've not redeemed and now they're doubling them up before Xmas it would knock a decent chunk of anything from them.

Have many/any ditched Sky or Virgin now all these different viewing options are available?

I was going to get rid of Virgin TV, and stick with Freeview, but it's cheaper for me to have the tv, than not! I downgraded to the lowest tv package, which along with having internet and landline, meant I still got a discount, the dscount is greater than the cost of smallest  tv package, so if I got rid of tv, my bill would be more ?!?!?

my Panasonic TV is 5 years old, so not sure if the "smart tv" aspect of that is really smart, it has a few apps like youtube, weather, but found it was easier to just use the ps3, or PC that is permanently plugged into the tv for youtube etc

Any decent TV you buy is going to have Smart functions, but do not let that be the deciding factor. Odd are something you plug into it is going to have better options. Image quality should be paramount. Get the best your budget allows, although these days the waters have been muddied with the introduction of so many different technologies.

Personally I still think plasma offers the best quality, but good luck getting ones of those. Read a lot of reviews (both pro and user) before deciding. Personally I'm staying well clear of 4K for the foreseeable future. It's not worth the premium, the technology isn't mature enough (hell, a lot of people still don't have 1080p sets) and it's overpriced.

You don't say what your budget is, or what size screen you want, but something like the Sony KDL40W705 is a good 2D set (I have the 32" model for the bedroom).  That's under £400 from Tesco. If you want 3D and a bigger screen the 50" 805 is a little over £600. I've seen both of those and they have great black levels for LCD, decent Smart features and are reasonably stylish. They're probably cheaper elsewhere, but if you have vouchers...

Tesco is currently saying a 5-7 day wait on TVs due to 'unexpected high demand'. Yeah, not like it's close to Christmas or anything...

Quite right I didn't did I.
Probably a 43 inch (I don't think I'd get a 48 past the house committee,SWMBO)
Budget being the operative word, which is why we're using the Tesco points.
Looking at this Samsung which has the Smarts anyway.
