small blu-ray player

pat-w (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 29th December 2013, 15:47

I'm planning to get a new kitchen & part of that would be a wall hanging tv. I was wondering if i could hide a small blu-ray player behind the tv. If I could work out how to power it, I'd buy a pc disc drive. It wouldn't get a lot of use, but it would be nice to be able to use it when stuck in the kitchen cooking. Anyone here got any idea's how I could do this?

Amazon have a small player (can't paste link, it's an LG BP325) listed that seems small, but would the machine being vertical cause playback problems?
Thanks all. :-)

will be interesting to see what you end up with... currently have a small flip down tv/dvd/cd/radio combo thing... neat but because of screen size/angle it can be limited!

Main issue is ventilation and stability. If both of those are addressed then orientation shouldn't cause an issue except for disc loading.
Think of PS3's/PS4's, both BD players, both can be flat or upright.
(As a matter of fact there were issues with early PS3's running on the horizontal orientation that were attributed to discs being slightly off balance and clipping the laser effectively buffing away the focus eye and the fix in case it happened was to have the unit vertical)

I have a feeling the player you mentioned is also sold by Asda or Tesco (poss. both!) so might be worth a wander into a store to see if the disc can be loaded into the tray without falling out if vertical.
Usuall noticable by 4 little outcrops around the outer disc area or a sort of recessed slot in the tray.
Eject your PC disc drive and run your finger round it to "feel" what I mean.

I hadn't thought of a PS3, the last one, slim, is a top loader isn't it? Thanks for the info about being upright.

Sorry Pat just re-read my reply and realised I wrote that badly.

I didn't mean consider a PS3 as a player to use (unless you want to lol), I meant to just point out PS3s are mounted that way and are BD players.

the thing about a ps3 is that I know it can play my ripped mp4 files, & also has catchup tv channels. I don't think it would be used for gaming so might be overkill for a kitchen tv. I havn't even sorted out where I'm getting the kitchen from yet so this will be the last thing to install.
I surpose fitting a dvd player would be easier, but as I own quite a few blu-ray discs it seems daft not being able to use them as well.
I'm disapointed that there doesn't seem to be a ready made ajustable housing (that I could find) to mount a disc player to the wall behind a flat screen. Thanks :-)

LG BP 125 blu ray is £35 at ASDA and quite small.

27 x 20 x 4.2 cms and allow about another + 8 cms on the 20cm dpth to allow for HDMI cable access unless you use a right angled cable.

It has ONLY HDMI and digital co-ax out (no scart, optical out or phono in/out)

6.1 sound though

Region 2 and I have yet to find a (remote) hack for it without burning an ISO file to disc

I got one in my stocking!

It will also play different formats from a usb drive.

Nice GUI

PS3s are £99 at Tesco

Tesco PS3s @ £99 are only old stock packs and only of you're very very lucky to find one now.

I think I got the last 4 in the Glasgow area yesterday from 3 different Tescos

Mike thanks for the LG info & PS3 price news.
Jimbo, I gotta ask, 4 PS3's????

Going to start looking at kitchens on Friday, starting with Wicks.
TBH I think I want an Ikea kitchen, but don't want to order one now as they are launching a new range at the beginning of February
