What does 3D Blu-ray look like through a 2D device?

RJS (undefined) posted this on Sunday, 1st September 2013, 09:54

Just wondering, if you don't have a 3D compatible display device but a 3D Blu-ray player, does it play alternating frames at twice the frame rate? Or does it interlace?

Reason for my curiosity is I'm wondering how easy it might be to hack up something that lets me get 3D through my projector. :)

It won't play unless the TV is 3D. I've just tried The Avengers in my bedroom and get this message.

"The disc has recognised that your player and/or display does not support 3D playback or your player firmware requires updating. Please insert this disc into a 3D-enabled bluray player and connect to a 3D-enabled TV display with an HDMI cable".

I've read of people using 2 similar projectors and polarisation filters to create a Passive 3D projector. That could be worth looking in to. http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=509

That's not strictly true. There are a few different scenarios.

Most (the majority) of 3D BDs include a 2D version of the film, either on a separate disc (preferred for quality reasons) or by discarding one of the .m2ts files that comprise the 3D image (there's one for both left and right eyes, one of which is much smaller in file size). Theoretically you can extract a 2D image from any 3D BD, but some titles lock the option out. Those are usually the ones that come with a separate 2D disc (Life of Pi being one).

Some 3D titles (Top Gun) offer no 2D option, but if you were to rip the main .m2ts files you could make a 2D version yourself, albeit one with arguably inferior quality to a separate 2D-only disc. Discs such as Top Gun are the ones that won't play back without a 3D TV, but they are in the minority.
