Pull up screens are a pain to use. Most 16x9 pull down ones which have black borders also have a large area of black at the top which you can adjust to suit.

Sometimes it pays to take your time with these things, especially when you have to live with it for a while.

Anything less than 5.1 with a big screen is sacrilege!

My blackout blind works absolutely fine and the only issue is that of rippling, which can be apparent on real screens too.
I have mine fitted to the ceiling and it drops down, it`s bigger than the picture height obviously but that soon vanishes from view when the lights go down.
I can use the projector lights on in my room too but obviously better lights off or low, white looks white to me, black looks black.

I probably will end up with a better and real screen someday but this was a budget option on a system supposedly at £500 that`s just topped out at around £1300 and almost made me choke even working that out!

And I still need a longer HDMi lead capable of 3D speed!

I really lucked out here. My speakers are from an old Technics hifi when I worked with Currys. System was stolen from display and the speakers were put in the storeroom for months then as the shop was being closed they were put out on display and priced to sell.
Soon as I saw them going out I grabbed them, average centre speaker, nice satellite surrounds, reasonable mid-size front shelf speakers with two wiring connections on the rear.
They were for systems carrying seperate front high and low and I didn`t even realise that! LOL.

With my Kenwood I just bridged the connections and they were fine, now I have the Onkyo which is 7.1 thinking "never be able to put in two more speakers in a 13ft sq. bedroom".... imagine my surprise reading the manual and it telling me I could set the front options to a "high" and a "low" for speakers like mine :D

Audio is great, centre is a bit well... you know, as most centre speakers are but even on music this sounds excellent.

....but I still love my kenwood <sniff>

thanks again for the continuing advice, all very valuable, really is. i have decided to keep the separates i brought down the other night. i have just put the two rear`s into the setup. they sounded really good, filled the room without being just loud so definitely enhances the effect, to go with a big screen. still van`t get over that.

as for the screen i think i am leaning towards putting up a screen. the window area was my first choice but to be honest there is too much going on there, blinds/big curtains and a fluorescent light tube. but the opposite wall, which i am using it on know, is big and plain so plenty of room to put the screen in due course. my immediate job is to put the projector up a little. at the moment whilst i am getting used to it and setting it up, it is on a sort of portable hi fi separates table/rack with glass shelves. but it is taking up to much room so i was looking at putting it on a shelf. in between the windows there is a wooden panel gong from floor to ceiling. so i thought i could put it about half way up. i don`t want to have the projector up near the ceiling as we have high rooms and i would be keeping the projector in a bag when not in use. would it be ok on a shelf and is there any you could recommend, i don`t want to buy the wrong one. i want to get it up this week if possible so it starts to feel permanent. i think then i can start to enjoy it.

would something like this work/be ok? it would be about 7ft or so, a foot above my head when standing.

many thanks.

bit of an update. i ordered the shelf, like the one in the link, and it was put up today. i had it put about 6 ft or thereabouts, i can just see the top when i stand. i put it there because earlier when i had the projector on and aimed at the wall this was the right sort of height. well i must have got it wrong as its way too high. i have raised the rear legs and it came down slightly, i even propped the back up which worked a bit but i don`t fancy leaving it like that. before i get the shelf lowered is there anything obvious i can do. i don`t really want it lowered too much.

because of this i haven`t really had much chance to set it up correctly so this is probably down to this, but there are dark bars above and below the main picture, my mum even noticed this. it added to the image being too high. i know from watching a lot of films on dvd/blu ray that in widescreen you get this which i like but i thought on a projector you didn`t. is this right or have i not set something up. it actually makes the image a lot bigger. cheers.

Sounds like you`ve added a shelf to do similar to what I had in the first place which was the projector sitting on top of the bridging units over my bed.
I bought a ceiling mount as you`ll probably find using it that projectors seem to be set up to project into the bottom of the screen centre creating the full image, but if you go the other route of it being above (as I now have) you have to invert the unit and do the same with the picture output in the menus.

I was under the impression that the "sweet spot" for position was dead centre and level with the screen and I had a position I could do that by using the same bridging units  opened and inside, but it left me with a failed miserably odd shape picture that I couldn`t fix with the keystone correction. Also meant any time you stood up you became a "Bob" (person who walks in front of the image LOL)

I`ve read in a few places that you should try to avoid using Keystone as it changes everything dramatically but I had to use it slightly to square off my image and tbh, couldn`t see the difference in image quality... just the squared off picture!

To the black bars... they`re there dependant on the source material, the projector doesn`t magically fill them in but what you do get is an image that the black edges blend into the background so you don`t notice them unlike a TV.

HTH, if you do buy a ceiling mount remember not to make the mistake I did earlier in the thread cos even now I`m considering changing mine... :-/

many thanks for the reply. bit of an update since the other day....the shelf was probably too high, even though it was just my height 6 ft ish....the image was up on the ruddy ceiling. so i undone the legs to make the front end of the projector go down which lowered the image slightly. so i tried some options in the menu, like you mentioned, but again the effect was minimal. so i was about to put the shelf lower but i thought that would defeat the point of having it a little out of sight.

the shelves were only cheap, but very good i thought, so i know have my two rear speakers on them, first time i have ever put the speakers on anything other than a stand in the ten years or more i have had them. i quite like them up out of the way. so i bought what i would describe as a book case type unit. it isn`t as high as the shelf but high enough. but this has the bonus of housing the blu ray player, the amp and blu ray disks, controls etc.... this has resulted in the image being just about where i want it. i cannot look up too much.

i was going to look into the ceiling mount is it but to be honest i would be constantly worrying about it falling, i am like that, surprising i know!!  i think this is a decent compromise that will do for the time being, gives me some flexibility and didn`t cost too much. know i have to start watching some things and calibrate the projector, haven`t even started on that yet. i did have to do some alterations to the picture, moving it around a little in the menus, like you said, but i also didn`t notice any issues when i did it.

sorry for going on a little, needed to share..cheers..

Test-card sorta things, criss cross patterns n all that kinda nonsense.

It let you set up colours, brightness, contrast using the same kinda scenario as the test-pattern grid on your projector but with colour and geometrical shapes etc.

If I manage to find `em I`ll try n send you a copy if I can but don`t hold ya breath!

Ah right, I guess I could achieve a similar thing by just making up test cards and shoving them through my iPad.

Actually... I love my projector, I don't want to know if it's out. I'll start getting really paranoid thinking this or that could be improved, or tweaked, then before you know it...

I'll just keep to pointing out when other people's stuff is off, far safer. :)
