Which Amp to buy?

RichardS (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 20th August 2001, 12:31

Hi, I`m looking for a decent 5.1/DTS amp & Sub, on a buget. I`ve seen the Kenwood KRF-V5050 or a Sherwood RD6 106 so far which fit my buget (the sherwood is en ex disp model hence the price of £130) are either of these any good? Or would you suggest something else? I`m looking to get the amp & a sub for around £200-£250.

Cheers for your help - Richard

I have just bought an Eltax sub along with 5 satellite speakers for less than the price of the same sub on its own if you bought it from some high street stores.....i ordered them from www.qed-uk.com Richer sounds have it on special price of £299 with a saving of £200....i got the set off this site for £109

What are the 5 speakers like? are they the silverardo`s or are they the small ones that go with the sub (like on the richer sounds site)?

Yes they are the small ones paired with the Amp....but dont let the size of them fool you , the sound of these is incredible...the sound is crystal clear and there is no distortion whatsoever even when turned up loud, i have them paired with the Kenwood KRF-V5050D and can say i am very happy with my purchase.

As you say, the Kenwood reviews well on homecinemachoice.com, but then so does the Sherwood - OK, maybe not quite as well, but then it is about £50 cheaper on Richersounds. Has anyone directly compared them?

Skirpydoink - you are pleased with the Eltax Stargates. Westy thinks they sound thin, I presume you don`t agree.
Anyone else got any experiences / comparisons?

Just to clear up any confusion here, the Eltax Stargate set up sold by QED is NOT the same as the Eltax Stargate set up sold by Richer Sounds (tho` they still seem a bargain!). If you check carefully, you will see the QED set up is the X1 (i.e. plastic?) and the RS set up is the X2 (i.e. aluminium). For further details, check out www.eltax.dk

Say, thanks lewjosh. That is subtle! I`ve got the pdf brochure from Eltax detailing the X.1 and the X.2s, and I didn`t notice that the richer ones have the larger center, which is the only visible difference!
Surprising really that Richer don`t take trouble to point out that theirs are the X.2s as they nearly lost my business for speakers over it.
I`ll be in there in a couple of months to buy some when I`ve saved up a bit more.

Thanks again for the heads up!

Ben
