Funny sounds from my Celestion S80 sub.... Any Ideas?

Buzz (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 18th October 2005, 16:29

I was wondering if anyone can help me before I go and spend some more money?

I have a Celstion S80 sub which has been woking perfectly up to now. When the unit is used it makes a sound that can only be described as wind noise, it is not noticeable when say a film for example has bangs and crashes in it, but once this has all stopped you can hear this noise. It also sometimes squeeks and then the wind noise returns.

I have tried adjusting the settings but to no avail. The noise is present whether it`s from a DVD, television, CD whatever input source.

My set up is 100% F-Series speakers, Sherwood amp with direct out for the sub.

any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thanks

I also have the same problem. It has been happening over the last few months and getting progressively worse.

My Celestion S80 makes the irritating sound whether there is any audio input at all! In other words, with no cables hooked up to my sub aside from the power source, it emits the "noises." It`s gotten to the point where I simply do not use the sub and have adjusted my surround settings to accomodate as best as possible.

My set up is also all F-series with a Denon receiver.

I`m just about to buy a KLH sub ($80) from Amazon that essentially matches the specs of my S80 - i just need a cheap replacement!

I also just emailed the US contact for Celestion (ofni[at]moc.aciremanoitselec) and it bounced back as an invalid address!

Goodluck.

If you have an S80 and have your original reciept and it was purchased less than 5 years ago give them a call, they will fix it FOC. The noise is caused by 2 failing transisiters on the amp, you can get there number from the website. Even if it is out of the 5 year warranty it`s prpbably not an expensive repair.

Celestion offer a great service, mine was away for about a week.

Hope this helps.

You`sve got wot sounds like a component problem matey !

Like most of today`s equipment (in spite of the maker`s claims as to their brand superiority!)
much of the electronic componentry is underrated in terms of its voltage handling ability. For example the circuit may have 10v rated parts but may get to have to handle quite some higher voltage levels which in a relatively short time(usually just after warranty expires!) may break down or become unstable. I have replaced hundreds of such parts so as to restore units to working order, mostly in items that have been discarded by the owners. Unfortunately it is YOU the consumer that is to blame for this quandary by demanding el-cheapo products which you can simply throw away if they break down, rather than pay for the services of a Technician to fix it!
Try finding a Techo who can fix most things like me?........we are a dying breed having passed our use-by date ! Time was when I could not sit down for five mins without someone wanting me to fix something. Now it is only my family and close friends who get to save hundreds of bucks on those pesky equipment fixes now !

If you read my answer to the previous post about a faulty S80 then read this posters comment ..." I just need a CHEAP REPLACEMENT !"........
You will quickly see the validity of my comments about consumers driving down the value of everything while hoping to save a buck.
What goes around comes around.... and the less you pay the less you get !

As the the Greeks put it "Quod Est Demonstratum" (QED)

If yah want it fixed ...PAY a Technician and support the fundamental consideration one must make before procuring anything......If you cant afford to fix it if it goes wrong.....don`t buy it !

Rules prevent me from languaging to answer this as I would really like to in my introduction.
However, I will settle for just saying this:

U should realise that Knowledge and learning has no use-by date.

Actually, he says peering over the top of his glasses, it is "quod erat demonstrandum".

At least the poster has realised QED is Latin and not Greek :B <---I know that`s a Geek but it`s the closest to a Greek smilie that we have.
