How much dosh was your first DVD player?

the_dugmeister (Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 28th December 2002, 19:35

Hello all,
I`m new here so please forgive if this has been asked several times before, but how much did you pay for your first DVD player? My first player was a Panasonic A-350,which cost me £500,and I paid £80 to have it chipped for multi-region.That wasn`t much more than three years ago.I am just totally blown away about how the format has taken off and the drop in prices in such a relatively short space of time.I can only hope that DVD recordable and DVD audio are even half as successful.DVD totally rocks, man!

ps-I sold that player in May last year at a secondhand shop.Got the princely sum of £45 for it.Depreciation sucks!

£174.99 Encore DV450 April 2000 (there was a £25 off offer in the first ever issue of DVD Monthly).

Then my second player was £60-ish (cost price) Sampo DVE612 Summer 2002 (US player bought at cost price from a dealer in California that I know)

My third player is the Wharfedale M5 which I got for £27 (!) from eBay in December 2002, although I am currently in the process of repairing this player.

£249.99 Samsung 709 about June 1999 when they first came out. I went out to get the Samsung that the multiregion hack was in all the mags at the time (I think the 807 or 870?) but did not know that there was a newer model (the 709) which I got. I was disapointed at first but then read all the rave reviews on this `budget` player so decided to keep it and get it chipped. I was lucky in that by the time I decided to send off for the chip the hack using the Aiwa Hi-Fi remote was found, never looked back. Had to have the origional one replaced after 6 months because the laser failed but it`s replacement and it`s brother are still going strong in the kids bedrooms.

Steve..

I bought a Mico A980 for £180 which I still have. It was one of the only players to play Mp3 at the time.

Mine was also a Samsung 709 - I paid £279.99 for a pre-chipped model in mid-1999.

Samsung 709 for £250 in July 1999 - same as Nikon really; took a chance that a remote hack would be found, which it duly was with the Aiwa remote hack and then followed by the Samsung remote hack. Still going strong as a second player, but replaced in May 2002 with a Dansai 852 as I needed something to play CD-R and CD-RW. Have just replaced the Dansai with a Pioneer 350 (multiregion of course) as the Dansai used to lock up randomly and sound quality was not that great.

£179.99 for a Wharfdale 750 from Tesco in 2000. Then £100 for a CyberHome in January this year which was useless frankly, so changed that for a Aiwa 370 after a couple of months. Then got a Philips 890 three weeks ago and the Aiwa was just changed for a Toshiba SD420 because it wouldn`t play DVD+RW. So now the 750 is in first borns bedroom, but will probably buy an Accoustic Solutions DVD for £70, so she can watch DVD+RW`s from the Philips and our son has his PS2 for DVD`s in his room. No problem there with the RW`s.

So, all-in-all, the total costs have come down dramatically over three years and no doubt there will be DVDR`s around for £100 in three years time.

PS - the CyberHome, Aiwa and Tosh were all changed FOC by Richer Sounds, including the Aiwa which was six months old. I`d recommend that company from a Customer Service perspective to anyone!
