Bridge undertaking

Was crossing a very long duel carrageway type bridge today. (two lanes one direction, central barrier and then two lanes the other way)

Outside lane had a car doing 45 MPH on a 50 MPH zone, ie, slow according to most drivers.

I was turning off left once over the bridge, so kept in inside lane quite a bit back. It was amazed at the number of cars shooting in to the inside lane and undertaking him, due to their impatience.

So is this actually legal now? as at any point that guy might have just move in, causing a crash.

I decided to move slower and keep further back due to this danger, till I was off the bridge and away.

So what say our resident policeman on this?

If in the UK, the car in lane 2 is breaking the law and could get £100 fine, and as for those undertaking, potentially Dangerous Driving which could result in a disqualification at court!

Just as I thought, mind you being a mature driver of over 35 years, I still cannot get my head around why people undertake, just to shave a few seconds off their journey. It seems highly dangerous.

Another example is at a roundabout where a lorry ahead is going to take up more than one lane on the roundabout just due to width, so I always hang back to let it do so, resulting in idiots behind pumping horns because I have slowed them down for a short while.

They just do not anticipate what is happening ahead, and why I hang back to avoid it.

Joys of motoring.

I guess most people aren't taught how to drive on a motorway, and are only taking driving lessons so they can pass their test as quickly as possible.

I think you're being very charitable there Rob.
The fact is, certainly in this town, the likelihood of you being stopped for a traffic offence is near enough zero to make no odds.
Two incidents last night.
Approaching traffic lights with one car waiting as they are already red a 2015 Astra went past me at between 50/60 swung out to then turn left across the front of the stationary car leaving tyre noise and rubber.
Small staggered roundabout with a give way I'm about to exit and take the staggered left. BMW series 5 comes round my left, only due to me that we both still have front wings, then takes off continuing down the right hand exit.

Something similar happens every night.
Traffic is largely left to stationary cameras (speed and junction management) or a few officers with the regulation Buck Rogers speed gun. Always the same locations. One of the main drag strips in town to and from the Tunnels? No speed camera and never seen a temporary set up, ever.
