I may have done something rather foolish...

Pete-MK (Elite Donator) posted this on Friday, 2nd October 2015, 22:43

Just after I turned 40, I gave myself a small and modest list of things to do before I'm 50. On that list were little things like attending Glasto in a camper van (not doing a tent there) or watching a big name band in a stadium. I didn't go as far as 'seeing the earth from space', but I did add something that was moderately more attainable, but still with a slim chance it may happen.

Weeellllllll.....

well done, one of my work mates who did trail walker the other year, and did Tough Mudder with me was hoping to get a ballot place. He said the alternative was to get a place through a charity, but then you have to guarantee you'll get a certain amount sponsorship, which he didn't think he'd be able to do :(

good luck with your training and on the day.

Depends on the charity, but I think it's around £1500. At the moment I'm a little on the chunky side, but I work well with a goal (sober for October last year was a doddle). I entered the ballot not really as a joke, but as a kinda half-hearted spur to get my arse into gear. Sort of backfired in a good way. Once I pay my entry I'm guaranteed a place, but I can defer once to the following year if I don't think I'm going to be ready.
The other big decision I have to make is which charity to run for. The magazine is 25% articles about the event, and the rest is just page after page of charities begging for your money. I have 3 choices;

ASD - Autism awareness

MacMillan - the firm I work for has this as their designated charity, so a couple of greased wheels might reap rewards in the sponsorship stakes

Brain Tumour Trust - for Dad

I know which one I want to go for, but I'm discussing it with my family over the weekend, and I think they'll agree with my choice

Congratulations.
I still run a bit, knackered ankle at the moment, and I've considered putting in for the ballot but I'm not sure I'd make 26 and a bit and still be able to work anytime soon afterwards. I'd love to run round my old home town though.

Just take it gently as you've plenty of time. There's any number of training schemes and advice out there but my main suggestion would be listen to your body. If it doesn't feel right back off or stop.

Can you not run for all three charities? As you've got the entry in the ballot running for just one is not compulsory.

I have thought of this, but each charity has their own 'day', as it were. Personally printed running vests, pre-and-after parties, rickshaws to said after-parties and free massages. As well as specific supporter spots for the families along the route. I probably could support all 3, but I could only visibly support one at a time.

Already booked the week after off. I did a charity walk along the Thames in 2011 from the barrier to Vauxhall (MI5 area) and certainly felt it afterwards. Stopping off at various pubs along the route probably didn't help, but it was a different type of event. Not sure the marathon organisers would be impressed if I cracked open a can of Stella halfway over tower bridge

I'm in training (lol) for Walk the Wight 2016, it's a marathon distance up and down a lot of hills, but I won't be running it! Saw some people running it this year, a few of them stopped so often I think they did it in the same time as us walking it.

My brother did the London Marathon a few years ago now, he said going downstairs was a nightmare for a few days!

Good luck!

Turns out that because I'm a ballot entry, I can choose more than one beneficiary. I just have to choose which snazzy free vest, after-party and massage I prefer...

I am running the Morrisons Great South Run in a few weeks, the second year that I have done it. Managed to get a place this year as an official runner for mind, who I raised money for last year too. My sister has had some mental health issues over the years, and is currently sectioned for her own safety, so the obvious choice for me.

Feeling pretty good about it, I run all year anyway although it still isn't shifting the pounds for me, so confident I will manage the 10 miles. Just hope the weather is better than it is today.
