Twitter trolls get outed

I wonder if in time people will start to realise that online doesn't mean anonymous and trolling levels will fall?

On Sunday, former Boston Red Sox pitcher and game studio founder Curt Schilling enacted some online vigilante justice against Twitter users who had posted violent and sexual comments about his daughter—by doxing them.

Doxing is where you unmask the person details of someone on the internet and publish them.

Quote:
Schilling didn't publicly disclose the identities of the other seven people, but he did hint that he might share that information with relevant parties: "I found it rather funny at how quickly tone changed when I heard via e-mail from a few athletes who’d been suspended by their coaches," Schilling wrote. "Gone was the tough guy tweeter, replaced by the 'I’m so sorry' apology used by those only sorry because they got caught."

'Doxing' Never heard the word before but have at it anyone who knows how. They're usually some sad back bedroom prat when they reach the press.

Any pages anywhere of how to out the b*ggers? Not that my low profile on Twitter has ever drawn any abuse (yet).

I am reminded of this story from a couple of years ago:

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2013/mar/12/english-boxer-curtis-woodhouse-twitter-troll

Quote:
English boxer Curtis Woodhouse turns up on the doorstep of his Twitter troll

When the light-welterweight and former Birmingham City and Hull City footballer received abusive tweets about his defeat to Shane Singleton, he took matters into his own hands.

When Curtis Woodhouse lost his English light-welterweight title on points to Shane Singleton on Friday night , he was branded a "disgrace" on the social networking site by 'Jimmyob88'‏, who has reportedly been abusing Woodhouse on Twitter for months.

The boxer was so enraged with the tweets that he offered his followers a £1,000 reward if they could help him locate the culprit. Woodhouse's growing number of Twitter followers chipped in and managed to track down his troll.

Woodhouse set off to find his troll, tweeting a photograph of the street on which Jimmyob88 lived. "Right Jimbob, I'm here," he wrote, adding: "Someone tell me what number he lives at or do I have to knock on every door #itsshowtime."

Realising the error of his ways, Jimmyob88 replied: "I am sorry it's getting a bit out of hand. I am in the wrong. I accept that." A triumphant Woodhouse went home, joking that he could have saved himself some petrol money by blocking his cowardly abuser.

What was particularly amusing was following the action 'live tweeted' and witnessing the troller's nerve slowly crumble as the boxer got nearer his target.

I think you'll struggle against anyone who created an account just to troll, but if they haven't then you'd probably go through their twitter feed looking for people they talk to, and follow, sites they link to, google their twitter name see if it comes up in any forums.

Basically you need to build up a profile of the user, where they go, things they like, personal details they mention. From that you might be able to narrow it down when combined with offline donkey work.

People leak all sorts of personal information without realising it, but tracking someone's real identity down is by no means easy work. Youngsters tend to make it a lot easier though by leaking loads across many social media platforms.

I suspect the guy doesn't really have the identities of the other trolls, just two of them, which would have been the easiest to track.

So if you name a person and they were not an offender, and they lose their job because of being named, what then?

Glad I am not one bit interested in joining Twitter or Facebook, just seems a total can of worms.

Not sure how to feel about this. On the one hand there is an immense satisfaction with idea of Twitter trolls getting their comeuppance, but at the same time there is always the possibility for false positives.

You only have to look at the sheer number of people whose lives have been put in jeopardy by being "identified" as Jon Venables. People allow their thirst for revenge to get in the way of logical thinking.

The only sensible solution is to involve the police, since they possess far better tools than Google and a few boxsets of CSI.

Unfortunately that doesn't take into account the Tools using the tools. Any number of articles lately about failings to investigate or realise the significance of info they already had.
