RE: AA battery/charger recommendations please..
Tried that dumb slow charger I got finally. Put aside the Eneloops and tried the Uniross 1300 mAh NIMH batteries that the fast and smart chargers kept quitting on. The last time I tried charging them, they didn't even get to a quarter charge (after the recommended 2 and half hours).
In the dumb charger it took 7 hours to charge, and they charged fully. Bad batteries my backside!

RE: AA battery/charger recommendations please..
Thanks all, I think I'll go with those.
I did a bit of looking around and there's still a good bit of doubt about whether or not slow charging makes any difference at all nowadays - and some suggesting even the opposite.
Thanks again folks!

I'd be interested in links to suggest it makes no difference, and especially interested in any that say the opposite!
The only thing I could find that related to that was this:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2683012/want-lithiumion-batteries-to-last-slow-charging-may-not-be-the-answer.html
Which refers to lithium-ion batteries and not NiMH, which is a different technology.
EDIT: My Maha charger lets me specify the charge current, and it also will test a battery and show the capacity, so I can actually test this for you if you want. :)

I was referring to opinions that fast charging shortened battery lifespans though.?.
The key is, as you say, get a good charger and don't overcharge. Any belief of shortening lifespan appears to either be negligible (or non-existent) and probably outweighed generally by having your batteries ready sooner.
EDIT: I think it was somewhere like this I found.

I got one of these in Lidl a couple of years ago and it's brilliant, worth hunting one down:

SJ - what did you get in the end/ happy with what you got?
Christmas coming up think I need to stock up ready for the girls' presents :(
RE: AA battery/charger recommendations please..
Hi mate - I went with the charger I linked to earlier. Seems great. Individual circuits so you can see how they're all getting on and then goes t a low trickle (although I take them out).
I got 16 of the latest gen Eneloop batteries too. Not used them yet but supposedly great. 1900mAh and can be charged 2100 times supposedly.
Don't really know why I've never gone down the rechargeable route - I think it was because they never used to last long.

Re that charger in lidl - went into my local store Friday and they had that charger linked above for "I think" £8.
