Pyramid schemes (Rant)

dkuk2000 (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 18th September 2014, 19:41

These things have been around for many years and it really winds me up that in this day and age people are still sucked into them.
A group of people have been convicted today here in Bristol for running such a scheme, However I have little sympathy for the so say victims.

 Quote:
Those running the scheme told its investors it had a quick, easy and legal way to make cash - by paying in £3,000 they would receive more than £20,000, as more members joined.
Surely anybody with £3K to give to strangers are totally stupid or have too much cash and don't know what to do with it.

I remember chain letters suggesting that I send a pound to the person at the top of the list and moving the names up the list when I send out 10 copies of the letters to friends .................... I thought it was bollocks back then.

At the end of the day anybody willing to part with £3K to these schemes are the idiots that believe they have won a European lottery without entering it and will be willing to pay vast amounts of cash to receive the winnings.

It appears that the victims were in the main old or elderly women . Rather than berating or implying they deserve all they got how about just a wee bit of sympathy for them. As my dearly departed auld dad used to say "It costs nothing to be nice"

I didn't mean it in a nasty way, but the elderly do tend to be gullible and trusting, and it's scum like this who pick them off easily.

details may be a bit shaky, but I remember about 10 years ago, an old colleague invited me round her house, as she had invited a few other people round, and some-one she knew with an business oportunity to make some money. So we went round there, and listened to this guy's presentation. He was very slick, and it was quite convincing, but part way through, I realised it was  a pyramid scheme.

I think the idea was that I'd act as an agent selling catalogue goods to people I know, I'd get commission, my friends as the introducer would get a cut, and the guy doing the presentation would get a cut.

the guy said he'd come round to our houses in a few days time to go over the paperwork, sort out the small details etc. so in that time I read the literature, listened to the cd explaining how it works, and read about the company etc on the internet. As I thought, it wasn't really a scam, but was a pyramid scheme and at my level, and the sort of ppl I knew I didn't see how they would buy stuff off me, they could get cheaper on their own from Amazon ;)

So, he turned up at my door, I politely said I wasn't interested after all, after reading the info. he explained a few bits more, and asked why I wasn't interested, so I told him about what I had read on the internet etc, as quick as a flash, he pulled out a print off of "rumours and lies" on the internet about it. at that point I said no thanks again, and closed the door.

I hope my old colleague just lost a bit of time, and no money, I felt a bit sorry for her, as it seemed her and her husband were quite often on the lookout for "get rich quick schemes" :(

Anyway, my point is, is that I can see how naive, or desperate ppl can fall for these things, it's not quite a case of some-one offering you magic beans ;)
