"The Apple Watch Costs Just £55 To Manufacture Despite Price Tag Of More Than £300
The costs of making an Apple Watch is just $83.70 (£54.63), according to a report by IHS Technology, making it Apple's highest mark-up.
The total cost of components was just $81.20 (£53.09), the company found, with a $2.50 manufacturing cost making the total just 24% of the price of Apple's cheapest watch (based on the US price for the Apple Watch Sport 38mm at $349.00).
The most basic model, the 38mm Silver Aluminium Case Sport Watch, currently retails at £299 in the UK while standard Watches range from £479 to £949.
Rather shockingly, the biggest hinderance of the Apple Watch - its woeful battery - costs the company just 80 cents (52p)."

I'm not saying the mark-up isn't huge, but the above doesn't take into account R&D costs or software development costs.

Take a Samsung phone, it's an OS developed and handed over for free by Google, which costs Samsung a small engineering team to compile and tweak it for their own phones.

iOS is developed entirely by Apple, so you should be also asking, why the hell does a Samsung Galaxy cost as much as an iPhone?

While I agree with you about just how much a flagship mobile costs from any manufacturer, charging £300 for a smart watch then putting in a 52p battery is taking the p***. If they put in a battery that cost ten times more it would still only be £5:20p. I know two people who were going to order an apple watch but decided not to because of the reported poor battery performance. Yet again this is Apple treating their customers with contempt, "just chuck in the cheapest rubbish battery, then we can stick in a better battery on iwatch 2.0 and then they'll all buy it again."

It's nothing to do with the price of the battery, it's just the technology. Battery capacity and size is directly related, you just can't drive something as powerful as an iWatch for very long without a bum bag battery belt. :)

Look at the iPad teardowns, it's about 80% battery, and each generation has the same life as the one before only because as they make them more powerful, they make the chips run cooler and use less energy.

Which reminds me, what happened to those little mini-generators someone was developing that ran on small amounts of fuel?

I agree with your friends completely though, one day's battery life for a watch is insane, no matter what it does.
