DVLA website incorrectly reporting car as 'unlicensed'

Chris Gould (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 30th July 2014, 20:17

I had to buy the Mrs a new car last December (purchased from a dealer just down the road from us) and it had tax until the end of this month. She still hasn't received a reminder, which is fair enough as they sometimes go astray (mine did last time) so we just tried to do it online with the V5.

The DVLA website is reporting the car as unlicensed, saying it's been such since November. That doesn't make any sense, as it had tax on it when we bought it in December and we've had we've had it for going on eight months. As it's only £30/year tax I can't see anyone having bought six months tax, but even if they did the numbers don't add up.

Anyway, I'm going to go into a post office and renew the tax tomorrow, but I'm a little concerned about this 'gap in licencing' as we have a valid tax disc in the window. Anyone else ever had anything like this? Do the DVLA often make this sort of error? The V5 came through in the wife's name no problem, so I can't understand why she didn't get either a reminder or, if they think it's been unlicensed for eight months, a letter demanding payment.

I'm now starting to wonder if the previous owner pulled a fast one and reported the tax disc lost/stolen and claimed the remaining money back. Not sure where we stand if that is the case. We have the physical disc as evidence I guess. The biggest concern is why they haven't been in touch with us in eight months. Probably letting the fine build up to a nice tidy sum...

As long as you have the physical disk to retain and can give them a photocopy, then if needed,  you can argue the case. Main thing is to get your new disk now.

I also had lack of DVLA response recently.....

For the first time in decades I never got a tax reminder on a car I bought eight months ago for the wife. I had to take the log book and get it taxed at my local post office.

I think the DVLA are in a right mess at the moment because of introduction of the 'no tax disk needed on your windscreen' law come October this year, and are trying to sort out the computerisation.

This means not only do the police have records of your cars insurance status on computer but now will also have your tax disk status, So they can check and stop you if you do not have either.

So not only do you need to keep a copy of your car insurance on you,  but now you better retain a car tax receipt either from the post office or on-line print out, and retain it, say under your cars carpet, just in case you are stopped.

Its a pound to a penny, many a car tax will not end up on compute files even when paid due to a mix up or delay, so keep a hard copy.

I thought if you were the registered keeper of the vehicle, and hadn't declared it off road, then if you didn't have a valid disc for more than a few weeks you'd get a fine through the post?

That's what I assumed. Turns out I was right though, well partially at least. It was unlicensed as SORN was declared on November 1st last year, almost two months before we bought it. I explained everything to the DVLA and after some consultation with a supervisor I was told that the tax would be reinstated and that, after it went through the system and they sent me a confirmation letter, we could then apply online. Obviously that would have meant that we couldn't drive it for a while, so I asked if I could buy a new disc from a Post Office, to which they said yes. Job done, crisis averted, providing they really have reinstated the disc and updated their systems...

I am assuming that when you bought the car you filled in the old V5(c) and returned it to DVLA and got sent out a new one in your details?

Does the existing VEL show signs of tampering... ie is it genuine to that car, or has it been altered...

Check you log book matches the car VIN... stamped in not the sticker in the window they are easily faked...

If you let me know what the car is I can tell you where to find it if unsure!

Yep, the Mrs filled it in as it's registered in her name (I was only there to hand over the cash!) and she got the new docs through. VEL doesn't look to have been tampered with.

It's a Megane (I know, French car.... but she'd always wanted one).

Cheers!

Glad your sorted.

Car paperwork can drag you down if everything is not correct, you get worried and think the worst that the cars is stolen or something.

Decades ago, I once bought a secondhand Ford Capri off a guy, and found the log book not tying in with the back numberplate, the front one was ok, did not even notice this for two weeks, one plate had  *****B* in it, and the other plate  *****G*.

I  had to replace rear numberplate, which had been different for two years prior to me buying. Previous owner did not realise it at all, as its not expected
