Line rental question

bandicoot (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 24th April 2014, 21:50

In my house, I have combined broadband and phone package with line rental included, total £30 a month.

My question is this, about my wifes parents in their home.

They pay....

BT phone and line rental, approx £20 a month dependant on calls. (paid by wife)
Broadband only, at £20 a month including line rental. (paid by husband)
So thats £40 a month.

Now I tell them they are paying to much and they are paying twice for line rental, and should get a combined package.

But they say the line rental is for phone, and the other line rental is for broadband, yet its the same BT cable.

So does a broadband only provider always charge for line rental, even if the home owners are paying for line rental already for a BT phone?

How do you resolve the situation my step-parents have at the moment with this setup?

Even I am confused with this situation.

No it's not normal to be paying line rental twice.

I am now getting both BB and phone from BT, but before my BB provider was Orange. and they charged £30 a month just for 8MB BB (no wonder I switched!), but now I have a combined package, I'm paying £15 a month line rental and £16 a month for unlimited 20MB BB, so £31 combined.

The error lies with your father's Broadband provider. He needs to call them and query the billing, explaining that his wife is paying line rental already. It should then be resolved.

I don't think they are paying line rental twice, they are just paying more for each service than they need to. If they shopped around they could get both cheaper, even if it wasn't combined from the same provider.

Cheapest atm I'd say is BT for combining it.

BT tend to peg you back to 10gb max per month - you have to pay extra for unlimited - on their cheap offer. Talktalk might actually be better (without checking).

I am actually using a talktalk package at the moment, so I think I will try further into persuding my step-parents to go for this.

But at  the moment one pays £20 and the other pays £20 (they have always split home bills separately), so its a case of one accepting paying £30 a month for talktalk combined package, and the other hands over £15 per month.

If they do not want that, then I will get on to their broadband provider and ask about it.

As they are pensioners, every tenner counts

Is their broadband also through BT or another company. Also, what speed/package does he have for the internet access?

Tesco broadband, unlimited use. Full speed, but he does not get more than 6 Mb/s, as being far away from the exchange. £20 a month.

Yup, the wife is wasting £20 a month. All they need to do is cancel the BT line and just use the Tesco one.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a conflict with having two line rentals on one line. Do they get billed twice for every phone call?
