Cameron's porn filter way more than a porn filter

Really disturbing piece in the New Statesman about this:
http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/2013/12/camerons-internet-filter-goes-far-beyond-porn-and-was-always-plan

BT blocks more than just porn...

Quote:
Over the weekend, people were appalled to discover that BT filters supported homophobia, with a category blocking, "sites where the main purpose is to provide information on subjects such as respect for a partner, abortion, gay and lesbian lifestyle, contraceptive, sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy."

But still, it's been proven scientifically by all right wing religious nuts that the best way to stop your child becoming pregnant, catching STDs or "choosing" to be gay is to stop them going anywhere with information about it.

As for O2...

Quote:
Their 'parental control' settings can be blocked from accessing Childline, Refuge, Stonewall or the Samaritans – which is even more frightening when you realise that they could just as easily be switched on by an abusive partner. The most vulnerable people in society are the most likely to be cut off from the help they need.

Because all those websites are clearly porn and your child should not be allowed to access them when they are being abused, feeling suicidal, etc.

Obviously as a parent (aka the account holder) you can disable these filters (if you know how). But it's shocking that somebody somewhere thought some of these sites should be blocked by a major ISP by default, at all.

It's because of the simple reason the people on charge of this country know nothing whatsoever about the internet. Cameron can stand in posh hallways and tell anyone that listens that the Internet CAN be controlled, and the claim that it's just too big 'isn't good enough', but making comically inept statements like that just go further to demonstrate how indescribably out of touch they are.

I'm on BT now, and if the filters are supposed to be in place, the system I've already got set up is bypassing them already

I think the porn filters the ISPs use appl to new customers, so if I switch to BT I'd have to let them know as an adult I'm able to make up my own mind what I look at when I want to.

Quite scary that things like refuge and childline should be blocked...especially not when as you say, an abusive partner could block people's only means of escape :/

Apparently it's also blocking a bunch of tech sites like slashdot.org, linuxtoday.com, blogspot.com, ArsTechnica, openbsd.org, freebsd.org, geekculture.com and linux.com.

Please God let there be legal action.

Quote:
Perry appears to be of the belief that if you ban it and block it, the problem will go away. She went on to tell the packed forum that apparently -- contrary to popular belief (and evidence) -- ISP filters will not overblock content.

A vote for Claire Perry MP is a vote for ignorance, it seems. Still, thankfully not all of the government is as tech illiterate as she is...

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2014/02/your-government-has-inadvertently-censored-the-web-but-its-working-on-a-fix/

Quote:
According to the report by the BBC, a whitelist of all these sites will be drawn up and will include sex education, health, and drug awareness charities. "Research suggests the amount of inadvertent blocking is low. However, if you are a charity and you deal with teenagers in distress that one or ten matters to you," conceded David Miles, chair of the UK Council for Child Internet Safety's overblocking group. (That's right Perry, there's an entire government group dedicated to investigating the problem.)

That's some good news at least. Though it's a shame the total lack of transparency on this filtering issue was there in the first place, if it had been more open then Mary Whitehouse incarnate wouldn't have caused the blocking of sites aimed at helping children in difficulties.

You reckon this is good news? Who determines who goes on this "whitelist"? Government? Commissions? Censorship starts with good intentions
This filter idea is a stupid one that people will circumvent and will have the courts overturn with time. The internet cannot be controlled. It's too late. All we can do is educate people on how to use it responsibly and help parents on controlling internet use of their own kids. Like everything Cameron says he will say it for immediate popularity, and then hope that people will forget how impossible the actual implementation is. Remember the Immigration lorry?

More things being blocked that shouldn't be:

I guess the government doesn't want a generation of kids growing up being able to use a soldering iron. We grown ups better get making the robots to replace us quick, before electronics becomes a lost art.
