Page 18 of I'm going to hospital today

Just caught up with my dentist now that all my treatment is over. The chemo killed two of my teeth, so they have to be extracted. First extraction is this Thursday. Better to get it over and done with, I guess.

After that, she can refill the other teeth which either lost fillings or cracked with the pressure caused by the chemo.

Guess now I've finished driving to the hospital all the time, it's time to go to the dentist on a regular basis for a while!

Oh, and I'm hoping to make an appointment at the opticians tomorrow, as my eyes have been damaged too. It'll be interesting to find out how much worse they are.

On the plus side, I should get a proper silicon prosthesis tomorrow. Wahey! lol

I hate the dentist, it's things like that which you don't really hear about when it comes to the aftermath of chemo.

Good luck at the dentist, dentists suck, but i'm sure it'll be ok compared to everything else you've been through :)

I assume you don't have to pay for the dental work because that really would suck.

The only thing you get as a cancer patient is free prescriptions for 5 years. They don't help with dental care or opticians. BUT I also claim Working Tax Credits, and that gets me free NHS dental care and free eye tests, plus a discount off glasses.

Thank goodness for that!

Well, I had my final follow up appointment with an oncologist today. I'd had some scans done since finishing treatment to check everything was ok, and she confirmed that I was now all clear. Very impressed with my recovery and how well I am now. Apparently most women are still feeling crap at this stage!

So now, I just keep taking the hormone tablets, which give me hot flushes, but I can handle that! I'll see an oncologist again in a year's time, and I'll have a mammogram on my remaining breast next Spring. In the meantime, my next appointment is with my surgeon in February to discuss that reconstruction!

I went to a brilliant pampering session at Maidstone Hospital a couple of weeks back. Run by a charity called "Look Good, Feel Better", they get top quality cosmetics donated by the manufacturers, and beauticians donate their time to do workshops for cancer patients where they give you a full makeover, then send you home with £250 worth of cosmetics. I really enjoyed it.
