Apparently a very un-hip bucked tooth public schoolboy. Still - it`s all about the art not the artist. and in this case I`d have to say that I think he is the most over-rated artist since....well, since Tracey Emin. And I`m with Chris. Graffitti is an uninvited blight and the multi-millionairre Banksy seems to be legitimising it. If I find out where his country pad is I`m going to make my way out there with a can of spray paint.

Oh...and no one would be even remotely interested in his `installations` if it wasn`t for his graffitti work, talked up by a generation who are under the impression that it`s streety and therefore clearly cool. :p

you`ve opened my eyes - what sort of art would you recommend?

I like Banksy`s stuff, if I get sent down to our bristol offices in near future I`ll see if I can get to this exhibit.

It just occured to me that fans of Banksy, or people who like political (or maybe not so political, but just humorous) art may like Winston Smith, I have the book "Act Like Nothing`s Wrong".

if you know The Dead Kennedys you may not know his name but you`ve seen his work :)

I`ll coyly pretend that this isn`t dripping with sarcasm and recommend the following:

Brion Gysin
William Burroughs shotgun paintings
Gilbert and George (design rather than art I guess...)
...and a zillion other more worthy exponents.

May I also add that I can`t help feeling that Banky`s popularity is a direct result of media hype. You don`t have to slavishly follow whatever is dictated. You are perfectly entitled to an opinion of your own. No one said you HAVE to like (or behave like) Hirst`s sheep ... :/

Gilbert and George aren`t over-rated? that`s amusing

photo collages of two old men in suits - showing their arseholes? great stuff

I cant think of anything to say about art that involves shooting a shotgun with a paint cartridge at a canvas - and although the whole `cut-up` thing is interesting i can`t say I ever took much enjoyment from it

as for `a zillion` - that doesn`t really have any place in a grown up art debate does it?

I appreciate your assumption that I like banksy because of media hype though - for the record I liked Banksy`s stuff before I knew who did it - it was the cheeky `this is not a photo opportunity` stencils on the south bank and the occassional rats that i spotted on my walk to work that made me a fan - not what the papers have told me about him in the last couple of years

i think a lot of his recent stuff is predictable - and to be honest i used to take a lot more joy from spotting a new banksy on a wall than i do from each new hype-soaked print release - but i think that an exhibition at bristol museum is a cultural experience that shouldn`t be dismissed with knee jerk `tracy emin` poopah-ery

And I just like some of Banksy`s stuff that I`ve seen pictures of. Strangely not because I`ve read any papers or online articles that tell me how hip he may or may not be. I am aware of him purely through pictures shown on the Beeb news site and glancing through a book of his in Borders...so maybe if he wasn`t famous/hip/in/overrated I would never have seen any of his pictures in which case you may be correct.

God knows, I am so far removed from having any knowledge of art and artists but as the saying goes "I know what I like". ;)

I`ll leave the more in depth analysis to you other brainy types and just carry on liking what I like but I will have a look at those you mentioned in your post as I lean toward stuff that is probably more graphic design than art.

Could someone please
Remove these cutleries
From my knees...

Hmmmm...funny that. I wouldn`t be the first to note the enormous debt that Banksy amongst others owes them. There would certainly have been no Banksy as you know and love without them.

Whoot...I concede. I don`t know why Banksy winds me up so much.

It takes all sorts I suppose. Part of it is the uninvited graffitti element ....a blight on poor old blighty.

ah I dont mean to be an arse - all art is referential and subjective
I`ll always agree to disagree when it comes to it - I`d just like to convince you that it is a bit more than just vandalism

I have a soft spot for banksy - even though all the hype annoys me (for example three years ago I walked into a shop and had a choice of loads of banksy prints to buy - i bought an unsigned one for £75 as that was all i could afford - now you have to know someone who knows someone if you want to buy one on release and they go for crazy money on tinternets)

its rare i get all uppity - i think it was the suggestion that i was bandwagon jumping - plus I do think his stuff is a cut above

I cant stand tagging or pointless grafitti - but in the right place I think that the right image is a great thing - banksy usually achieves this - i think

if you are interested i could post some links to some other interesting arty things? not just by him

also - i can appreciate gilbert and george and really am predisposed to like anything william burroughs does even if it is usually quite hard going

and - this might be your thing - i know where you can buy a sheet of uninpregnanted LSD tabs signed by timothy leary

and yeah - i am an art collector
