Star Wars Battlefront

Beta is currently open until the 12th on PC, Xbox One and PS4:

It looks nice, but plays like a very simplified version of BF4. I got bored after half an hour :\

The sound design is fantastic though.

Always wary of PC/Mac game FREE demos in case of hidden viruses.

Been caught out recently on my home computer due to dodgy website, and had to wipe my C drive and reinstate windows and programs to factory settings from the hidden partition, a four hour slog, grrh!.

I almost posted about this last night. It looks and sounds amazing - easily the most visually impressive Star Wars game yet - but it's so dull. It confirms my worst fears after hearing it was going to be multi-player only. A single player SW game - even one with a simplistic campaign like SWBF2 - would have been incredible. I doubt I'll even buy this... If I do it'll be when it's really cheap so I can check out the Missions/Hero Battle modes.

When will games companies learn that not everyone - and in this case especially the core SW audience - is of an age where they only care about MP? I have neither the time nor reflexes to compete with the teenage kids playing this. I ranked up to level 4 but was lucky if half the time I could get as many kills as deaths. The Walker Assault mode is horrendously unbalanced as well. I played a bunch of games (on both sides) and not once did the Rebels win.

Bandi, your conspiracy stuff is hilarious sometimes. This is a tent-pole game from a well-known publisher delivered through a recognised deployment system. It doesn't have any 'viruses'.

There is nothing conspirital about having to reinstate my computer back to factory settings taking four hours. Happened after son downloading a free game. (He will not be doing that again, as changed his password to stop him using my home computer. He can b****up his own laptop in future).

Bandicoot - it appears like you/your son have got "confused" about what a free game/demo is.

Gareth and Chris I think are talking about legitimately free demos, often found on publishers websites, are through Steam etc.

what your/your son seem to be talking about is free, as in warez, i.e. you supposed to pay for it, but some-one has made the game freely available, or created a patch or keygen so you don't need to, often known as pirating, often availabel from sites which most ISPs try to block these days. however, sometimes these patches/keygens/cracks come with an unwanted suprise, I guess you could say it's the price you/your son pays/risk you /your son takes for illegal activity?

I think a lot of us may have "mates" who have had the same problem when trying to save a few quid here and there ;)

Free games and demos best got through Steam, GoG and Origin. :)

It sounds like he either downloaded a dodgy crack for a pirated game (which contained a virus) or installed a free-to-play game and didn't untick the optional malware crap they bundle into the installer. Either way, this is different.

This is an official beta provided by EA's own Origin platform. If you get a virus from this you should probably abandon the internet altogether ;)

After playing it as much as I could at the weekend I think I'm going to get it after all. Don' get me wrong, I'm lamenting the presence of even the most perfunctory campaign modes (a la Battlefront II), but I enjoyed Drop Zone and surprisingly I wasn't completely terrible at it. Walker Assault is seriously unbalance din favour of the Empire at the moment, so I hope they sort that, but the other online modes sound quite decent.

The Missions could also end up fulfilling my offline cravings. Survival is too easy in the beta, what with only being six waves on low difficulty, but  fifteen waves on hard should be more of a challenge. Plus there are multiple planets. It looks as though the Battle modes will allow for player vs bots versions of the online modes, plus hero battles. I really wish that DICE would announce more features now that it's only a month away though, as the beta didn't feature much content.

Still, it's less than £30 on the PC so I might well go for it. Bit worrying that people already appear to be hacking it, but Fairfight was booting a lot of cheats so hopefully it won't be ruined by idiots.

Downloading a 10Gb demo took a little longer than expected, and I wasn't too hopeful after it continually crashed my GFX card every time I tried to run it, but after adding some commands to the origin startup I finally got it running. It looks pretty amazing, but I've been a tad busy with unmedicated children this weekend so never got a chance to play it.

Think I'll give the MP a miss for the time being. I know that bunch are an unforgiving bunch at the best of times

I uninstalled it as it got very repetitive very quickly.  That may have just been because of one map though, not sure how many in the full release.  Personally I think it was the wrong mode for beta and a conquest map would have been better.  My overriding impression was CoD in a Star Wars skin.

Didn't really understand the charge pick-ups, what are they for?  Found plenty of people avoiding them.  The weapon pick-ups, if you could get near them, were good and I liked that you didn't lose them through death, especially as they are a one shot deal.

Looking and sounded good though...
