SSI games making a return

RJS (undefined) posted this on Saturday, 9th August 2014, 09:02

Anyone remember SSI games? Strategic Simulations Inc did a lot of games on the Amiga/PC (amongst others), like the classic RPG Eye of the Beholder series. They had very distinct boxes with gold lettering.

Well apparently some former SSI employees have formed TSI Games, Tactical Simulations Interactive, with the aim of bringing the sort of games they used to make back.

I guess we'll find out in 8 days what sort of games we'll see first.

Interesting, hopefully they'll have a very modern spin otherwise no real point...

Usually a "modern spin" means lets make it an FPS. Where as what we usually want is just better graphics.

Seven Dragon Saga – the epic RPG debut title from Tactical Simulations InteractiveNew independent video games studio formed by SSI alumni, updates “Gold Box” RPG experience with modern tech and new core gaming system

Tactical Simulations Interactive (TSI) is excited to officially announce Seven Dragon Saga – an original RPG for PC, Mac, and Linux, based upon an original pen and paper role-playing system designed by former Strategic Simulations Interactive (SSI) alumni Keith Brors and David Shelley.

Seven Dragon Saga takes place in a high-powered fantasy universe, revolving around the Empire of the Seven Dragons. Eschewing traditional RPG tropes, Seven Dragon Saga provides the player with effective heroes right from the start, with TSI aiming to provide the next step in meaningful player experiences in the same way that SSI’s ‘Gold Box’ titles did during the 1980s and 1990s.

This is not a tale of farmers or aspiring novices learning how to swing a sword; Seven Dragon Saga is a tale about the use of power. Players will need to assemble a brave troupe of adventurers “touched by the winds of the chaos”. Known as the Touched, these brave adventurers will face the unknown, and embark on a quest to discover hidden truths and determine the fate of the Empire.

Better graphics! Yay!

True, but I actually meant more updated graphics.

Personally I'm looking forward to the 'remastered' version of Wings and, of course, the relaunch of Gauntlet very shortly...

I think the X-Com: Enemy Unknown is maybe something we'd both agree on as what we want from a new spin on an old game. Same feel as the original, same basic game mechanics of building a base, equipping a team, researching weapons, capturing aliens and turn based combat, but modernised.

Couldn't agree more...
