Some gameplay footage:

You wait years for a decent space combat game and it looks like we'll be getting this and Elite Dangerous at once.

Over a year later, still no Star Citizen, despite the insane croud-funded money ploughed into it. Been following the various "Peter Molynoux" style stories, latest one here:

Quote:
"$90 million for what he's pitching, even with a competent leadership, you couldn't do," CS1 wrote. "The thing you have to remember about Chris Roberts is that, before this, he hadn't made a game in 12 years. He has no concept of what can and can't be done today with that amount of money, or for a game like this. Chris Roberts hadn't made a game in 12 years, and he was actively ignoring the input of people who have been in and a part of the industry that entire time."

I was watching the Gamescom livestream on Twitch last night and was blown away by the scope of what they're attempting. I hadn't really paid much attention to this because until recently, there hasn't been much to show. it's finally starting to look like a real game. I love the atmosphere and sound design in what they showed.

It still has a multitude of problems, like the shoddy framerate, netcode issues, bugs and wonky looking combat. If they can iron out all of those issues, this will be one of the greatest games ever made.

I think in some respects they are lucky that technology in gaming isn't exactly flying forward in recent years, many potentially great games with long development times have ended up becoming outdated before they even stood a chance of release because a new console came out, or people just got used to better graphics.

Though at some point they need to stop making new features and just make sure the core gameplay is good, otherwise it won't matter what you can do in it!

Seems someone discovered a way to track their financial position:

Quote:
The end result is that, even after supposedly raising over $152 million from backers, they now have two (Foundry 42, Cloud Imperium Games) bank loans which they have to carry on their books, and which have to be paid each month from backer funds, seeing as the company has no other source of revenue.

And we still don’t know how many loans – if any – the US based entities have on their books, which, in addition to investor money, is probably why they are now cash strapped and need to continue taking loans to make payments on current loans, while trying to stay afloat.

All sorts of rumours that it's going to all go down the pan this year.

Interesting Forbes piece about the whole thing so far:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/mattperez/2019/05/01/exclusive-the-saga-of-star-citizen-a-video-game-that-raised-300-millionbut-may-never-be-ready-to-play/#58ec6e845ac9

Quote:
At the end of 2017, for example, Roberts was down to just $14 million in the bank. He has since raised more money. Those 100 star systems? He has not completed a single one. So far he has two mostly finished planets, nine moons and an asteroid.

Amazing, considering what Frontier have managed with Elite Dangerous in the same time.

Quote:
This is not fraud—Roberts really is working on a game—but it is incompetence and mismanagement on a galactic scale. The heedless waste is fueled by easy money raised through crowdfunding, a Wild West territory nearly free of regulators and rules. Creatives are in charge here, not profit-driven bean counters or deadline-enforcing suits.

This is what happens when you don't have managers in control of artists...
