3DS Hacked... allegedly

RJS (undefined) posted this on Monday, 17th December 2012, 11:29

Apparently a reputable source has posted a screenshot showing a hacked message:
http://gbatemp.net/threads/has-the-nintendo-3ds-been-hacked.339319/

Quite how much use this hack is, it might just be useful for homebrew. Nintendo are probably hoping it isn't going to be the flashcart nightmare the R4 was for the DS.

Apparently a card is being released at the end of June, here's a demo:

Be interesting to see if Nintendo can block this.

I'm sure it did, but it would also have hit Nintendo in the pocket with lost revenue from third party licensing and their own game releases.

oh, most definitely. but i`m pretty sure that the hordes who bought a DS & R4 just so they
could play "free" games would almost balance that deficit with the sales from hardware.

it obviously ****ed Nintendo off though judging by the length of time it`s taken to circumnavigate
the 3DS`s security.

So the Gateway 3DS only works on machines with 4-4.5 firmware, which are increasingly difficult to track down apparently, what with the current firmware being 9.2.

Now a new card has come out, called the sky3DS, which works with all current 3DS'. It's more expensive than the Gateway, and has a 10 game limit:

I suspect if they fix that 10 game issue, this will be the new R4.

Apparently Gateway 3DS are going to release support for 9.x firmwares very soon, people suspecting this of being as a result of reverse engineering the sky3DS methods.

Also people making progress with getting homebrew on the 3DS via an exploit in Cubic Ninja:

People have started porting some games to it:

So this has a similar hack to the Wii, exploiting a flaw in a game:
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/11/heres-how-to-run-homebrew-on-your-3ds/

From what I can tell, it might not be too long before people extend the hack to run pirated games. It seems to be possible, but the author who released the homebrew hack deliberately limited the scope of the hack for that reason.

Some obscure game distributor is about to get a windfall of sales I suspect.

http://www.gateway-3ds.com/

Quote:
Today we are proud to present our latest achievement: GATEWAY ULTRA!
With GATEWAY ULTRA we support ALL 3DS/2DS/3DS XL consoles on sysnand firmware starting from 4.5 and all the way up to 9.2!

This release also contains an update for the Red Gateway card with:
– improved support for microSD cards
– faster write speeds
– and a surprise feature that will be announced in the next update!

As an extra bonus, we have added support for:
– DOWNGRADING your 4.5+ console back to 4.5!
– RESTORING a NAND dump back to sysnand!

For users on firmware 4.5 or above, you can trigger the Gateway boot method by launching the Browser Application, and visiting the following site:
* http://go.gateway-3ds.com

Make sure the Launcher.dat file is placed on the big SD Card (internal to the 3DS console) when visiting the site.

The Launcher file can be found in the Downloads section [here], and downgrade packs for the different console regions will be added shortly!

We also have the following notes:
* It may be needed for some users to clear cookies and history in the Browser Application for proper activation.
* We also recommend that users bookmark this site for convenience.
* Support for New 3DS is still a work in progress, please be patient!

That's quite an update. I'm sure Nintendo are feverishly trying to block it with an update of their own.

Apparently the initial exploit is via the Web Browser?
