We've just come back from the States.  One newish ride is the Transformers one in Universal Studios.  You're in a 'car' that moves around/tilts etc. in perfect sync to the huge full field of vision 3D films.  You are so involved you don't have time to see how it's all done but it's the most immersive 3D ride 'thing' I've ever done.
Also did one in Epcot (Sum of All Fears) where you design your own ride (jet plane, roller coaster etc.) and can then ride it.  You sit at the end of a robot arm and your head is then covered so all you see is the video screen.  It then throws you all around while you watch the ride you designed - not just side to side tilty things but fully upside down etc. for all the loop de loops I had to include.  Before I started my ride it warned that I had 7 full inversions and was I sure I wanted to ride such an extreme ride.  Erm, yup, I do!

Guy at work with dev kit 2 is impressed so far. he says the drivers are a bit crap, and so far he's only got 2 demos to work, but the 2 he has he said are really immersive, and show good potential.

spoke to bloke at work who has one today, says he is enjoying it, is tempted to sell his dev kit, ready for a consumer release one.

he said it works well with some proper release games, especially driving games, but also the new Alien game supports it, however he did say after playing for a long time he feels a bit nauseous!

Everyone seems to be pushing one of these for release this year:
http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2015/03/03/gdc-2015-project-morpheus-update/?emcid=social_20150304_41478026&adbid=1112189402140387&adbpl=fb&adbpr=115605765132094

So that's Sony doing one, and Valve and HTC are doing one too (or is that one and the same?).

the guy at work who had a dev kit recently sold it, got back what he paid! He said it was a good time to sell as he heard murmerings about the consumer release and so thought if he waited any longer he wouldn't get back anywhere near what he spent, about £300 I think he said.

Anyway, he said he enjoyed it and will def get the consumer release. his only slight grumble, is that the screens aren't quite high enough resolution on the dev version. He said there was a name for it, which I forget, sounded a bit like when you go to an outdoors event, and the big screens look good, but up close not so great.

So after reading the specs for VR in Elite Dangerous and getting irritated that they appear to be one graphics card up from what I currently have (and the minimum Oculus Rift specs), it might be a while before I get one.

Though you can now view your normal Windows desktop with it:

Pre-orders for Oculus Rift start Wednesday, no price or shipping details yet:

I thought a little about Elite Dangerous and how great it would be with a VR headset, and then something occured to me... it has a lot of buttons which you can't see wearing a headset. Same goes for flight simulators.

So maybe games worth buying it for isn't out yet.
