The Future of Gaming in Virtual RealityId Software’s John Carmack explains why Doom 3 on Rift is just the first step

I guess it`s been a while since VR reared its ugly head ;) I played an arcade game demo somewhere once, it was quite good, took a while to get used to the headset and that so shoot someone behind you , you just had to look round and point your arm behind, rather that turn your whole body.

That must have been best part of 20 years ago, i.e. it was 3d but v plain block style 3d, things have moved on a bit since then :)

It`s a nice idea, but I can`t see anything but a really high frame rate and ability to rotate easily 720 degrees, as making it usable.

It`s like those head tracking things, I know people who use them for simulators, but when the head moves and the monitor doesn`t it seems a bit silly.

That said, I still want a VirtualBoy!

Had a go on one ages ago, but I don`t have one now. Have you seen the Angry Videogame Nerd`s review of the hardware? Quite funny.

just had a funny moment at work. a few guys at work are gadget freaks, one just bought a new phone recently, so I asked him what's next. he said "Oculus Rift" told him I had never heard of it, so did a little google. Said to him, he should have told me it was the thing Carmack was involved in, as I had heard of it, so then did a search here to see if anyone was talking about it, and realised I had mentioned it!

Apparently was v popular at CES
