Valve has made its first real move toward its vision of having a "Steam Box" in every living room: a native Linux client for its popular game and software digital community.
Steam for Linux launched today for the popular Ubuntu distribution of the open source Linux operating system, along with an extensive sale on Linux-native games, including Valve`s recent ports of Half-Life, Counter-Strike Source and the free-to-play Team Fortress 2.

How to: Steam on Linux (Debian 7.0)
This goes without saying, but honestly, I never thought I`d see the day. Running Half Life nice and smooth... On Linux. Wow.
Although there were really no actual problems with the installation process, there were some annoyances, so I`ve decided to compile a short list of steps that you should follow in order to use Steam on Debian. Please note that these only solve problems which I myself have encountered, and that they are usually solved for you if you use Ubuntu.

Valve gives Debian developers games
Quote:
The Valve company has been hard at work recently developing a Linux-based platform for gaming. The new Steam gaming console is powered by a Debian-based operating system, giving Valve a great deal of flexibility and performance. In a gesture of appreciation to the Debian development community Valve is offering Debian developers free games, a lot of free games. Neil McGovern posted the following to a Debian development list: "Valve are keen to contribute back to the community, and I'm discussing a couple of ways that they may be able to do that. Immediately though, they've offered a free subscription to any Debian Developer which provides access to all past and future Valve produced games!"

Newsbrief: Crysis and Ryse developer Crytek confirmed today that its CryEngine game engine now has full native Linux support. A demo of the new feature will be on display at next week’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.
CryEngine’s Linux support comes as PC game distribution leader Valve Software makes major moves to support Linux game development with SteamOS and Steam Machines.
You can read more about CryEngine at Crytek's official blog.
this is massive, like when Doom was ported to Unix, Linux, Irix etc, and the quake engine ;)
So they've got the engine running under Linux, now to to convince publilshers and developers to write for it :(

Hey gamers! DirectX 11 is coming to Linux thanks to CodeWeavers and Wine

The chains are loosening. DirectX still binds many PC games to Windows. Now, CodeWeavers expects CrossOver to support DirectX 11 by the end of the year, with Wine gaining compatibility shortly afterwards.
In other words, more Windows PC games will “just run” on Linux, and it’ll be easier for developers to package those games with compatibility code and officially support them on Linux.
