EA Begins Their (Sad) Ubuntu Game Push

The first two EA games have arrived in the Ubuntu Software Center today and it confirms this so far...
The first two games? Lords of Ultima and Command & Conquer Tiberium Alliances. These are free-to-play games out of Electronic Arts. Lort of Ultima is written in JavaScript and has already been platform independent, but now you can get it (still for free) out of the Ubuntu Software Center. Not as exciting as Steam, but could open the door for more games, hopefuly again they`ll use OpenGL, but I can`t see them porting many 360 or PC DirectX games :(

Linux gaming on the rise: EA arrives on Ubuntu and Valve plans Steam portAfter indie succeses, Linux is finally attracting mainstream game publishers.
don`t think I`ll stop dual booting just yet though ;)
I`ve always preferred the indie game scene on Linux. Some tremendous titles like And Yet It Moves..., World of Goo, Amnesia/Penumbra and the like. That said, yes I am excited at the prospect of Steam heading to Linux. The Ubuntu Software Centre has obviously proved it`s own corner in this respect too. I was a bit annoyed I missed out on the latest Humble Bundle though. What a fool.

Yup it`s happening! Very, very exciting indeed. Count me in. :)
I wonder if ppl will do some comparisons of FPS with different WMs/DEs running in the background, and eventually different distros. Hardcore gamers converting to Arch with IceWM is probably a long way off ;)

"Our perception is that one of the big problems holding Linux back is the absence of games. I think that a lot of people...don’t realize how critical games are as a consumer driver of purchases and usage."

Newell says his cutting-edge company, which runs popular game distributor Steam and develops game series Half-Life, Portal and Team Fortress, needs an open environment in order to thrive, and that Microsoft`s upcoming Windows 8 is "a catastrophe for everybody in the PC space" due to its relatively closed nature.
good to know they`re really behind bringing AAA titles to Linux, will be interesting to see if many others follow suit, but I`m not sure how many dev cos will be able to afford the time/effort to ditch DirectX and go OpenGL, and also learn all the network and sound programming etc that`s needed.

Bought my first Linux Steam game tonight. running on my laptop, Acer 5740G that is 3 years old now, Core i5, 4GB, SSD and Ubuntu. Runs well enough, a little sound synch issue but nothing else so far. And the developer is also actively supporting the linux community on the forum, asking for bug reports and feedback from the community.
