New SimCity will require online connection

Probably not a major deal in this day and age, but still annoying! I could understand if it was free to play or something, but it`s not afaik.

that`s not that uncommon these days though is it? I suppose normally it`s just registration requires online. Seems like another way to "persuade" ppl to get it from other means than buy legit copy.

I think also these companies forget that the internet isn`t 100% available to 100% of the ppl 100% of the time, ISPs have outages, and hardware goes at all parts of the chain :(

I remember being annoyed I couldn`t play Dragon Age Origins one weekend `cos Bioware were having server problems, that is until I found a way to stop it trying to connect to their servers!

Likewise with The Sims, a couple of times have bought new add ons, tried to register, servers having problems so can`t connect, missus can`t play her new game :(

I remember a drama a few months ago about customers complaining about being unable to play a game as it required a constant active internet connection, although the game itself had no online features whatsoever. It was an attempt by the game`s producers to ensure the game wasn`t a copy. That`s fair enough, but the game has to be worth paying for for this DRM crap to work, and by all accounts, it wasn`t (can`t for the life of me remember what the game was)

Whatever it was I bet it was cracked so that it didn`t require a net connection.

This is the same as what Ubisoft have been doing for a couple of years.

Assassin`s Creed 2 required a constant internet connection. The game had check points littered throughout, where it would connect to a remote server and obtain an authorisation code to continue. The pirates simply created a virtual server and played through the whole game to get all the authorisation codes. Then, the cracked version simply connected to the virtual server, which fed it the correct authorisation codes.

It took a few days to accumulate all the codes, but once they were all found all you had to do was run the virtual server app while you played the game.

It was a shame because the game itself was excellent (unlike the majority of Ubisoft`s output)

I don`t think it`s quite the same thing, as a large part of the online bit is related to sharing economy and road links with neighboring cities. At the same time, I hope they at least let you play through a disconnect for a while.

Apparently you won`t get kicked from the game if your internet dies.

Football Manager went to must-use-Steam system this year. There was a lot of complaining, but I don`t know if it badly affected sales. What I did notice was that the price dropped to £14.99 at Amazon before Christmas, and I don`t recall that before.

Not a good idea in the middle of a recession. Two months after the game is released, the company goes out of business, and the servers get the plugs pulled.

Whilst I doubt that will happen to Maxis, or EA Games, or whoever currently owns the franchise, you make a good point. When you buy a game, you aren`t renting it for a few years, if they don`t offer any sort of offline only version when they take the servers down, I hope there are class action lawsuits in the US.

I wish they`d release an iOS version that wasn`t so buggy as to be unplayable too.
