I`ve been late to the Nintendo party, never really being a big fan of Mario at the time. My first console was a Sega Master System, because it had versions of the arcade games I loved (Space Harrier, Out Run, Hang On, Shinobi) which coming from a ZX Spectrum was a big step up.

Never had a NES or a SNES, no interest in the N64 either, was too busy playing Amiga and then PC games.

The next console I got was a Dreamcast, because they were cheap in Game (being discontinued), followed by a Gamecube (for the same reason, and later an XBOX).

The thing that sold me on the GC (apart from the price) was Pikmin, it looked so much fun and original, and when I actually played it the game was way more fun and original than I`d even hoped. So the GC was my first Nintendo experience, and the Rogue Squadron games really helped, as did Mario Party.

The Dreamcast really fed into my love of unusual and quirky titles, which was born in the arcades which for many years were the innovative place because hardware was usually built specifically for the job, and the DC had lots of unusual hardware and games.

The GC seemed to carry on the unusual games route, and when I finally saw a Wii it wasn`t Wii Sports that made me want one, it was Rayman Ravin Rabbids. What can I say, I played a lot of Track and Field in the arcade, and Decathlon on the Speccy.

I love my Wii, and the fact it also plays my GC games as well is really handy.

The Wii U price is a tad expensive though, I love the idea of a tablet controller, it could lead to some nice quirky titles, but at that price I`m going to want to wait a few months and see some must have games before I commit to it.

I`m never going to buy a PS4/XBOX720, and would only buy a PS3/Xbox360 if someone is selling them off cheap. I don`t dislike racing and fps games, I just prefer my racing to be PC based (as thats what I have my wheel on) and fps is an occasional interest rather than a dedicated obsession for me. Those consoles seem to be all about the FPS/racing.

game have announced their prices and "deals"

http://www.game.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/HubArticleView?hubId=170589&articleId=170595&catalogId=10201&langId=44&storeId=10151&cm_mmc=update-_-wk0712FY-_-skinny-_-WiiU

30/11/12 from 259.99 - white basic

black premium 309.99

Black Wii U Premium Console with ZombiU and Wii U Pro Controller 349.99

black pro controller 49.99

£50 seems way too expensive for a controller.

I was quite interested in the Wii U, but we only bought PS3 last Christmas, so it`s too soon for us to spend this much money on a new console, especially when we don`t and will have even less time to play games come November.

Got an email from Play the other night with their pre-order page;
£259 to £350? I think Ninty just might be pricing themselves out of the market again unless there`s a phenomenal campaign for it.

The controller is £39.99 or £34.99 for white (one of my pet peeves, paying different prices for different colours!) but still too much for a controller itself.

Didn`t the 3DS come out too expensive and then a few months later they dropped the price apologising for getting it so wrong?

Kids want a Wii for Crimbo

Should I get them one or should i consider the Wii U

Depends really,

how old are the kids, are they old enough to "need" the latest and greatest games

have a look and see what upcoming games there are for Wii, if there`s not much new coming out, then you`ll be able to get one, and existing gams pretty cheap, but not much new.

Do you want to play games as well?
Do you have a PS3 or 360? Advantage of Wii U over Wii, is that some "mature" games like Batman which weren`t out on Wii are coming out on Wii U, so there "should" be more of everything for everyone, but games like being ported probably won`t offer enough new stuff/gimmicks if you`ve already played them on PC/360/PS3.

In short, depends if  you want latest and greateast, or want something cheap and cheerful, but with limited lifespan/appeal.

I bought my GameCube quiet late in the day 2nd hand, but lasted me until last year, when I bought a PS3, was happy with GC and bargain games.

Kids are 7 and 11

My son is a big fan of Mario

We have a 360

I can see this being like DS Lite as soon as they bring out an updated version the kids want that

One question I forgot to ask is the Wii U backwards compatable

Apparently it will be backwardly compatible with the Wii, including virtual console and wiiware games, but not the Gamecube. It won`t play Wii games on the gamepad display.
