Dragon's Lair The Movie

Kickstarter to turn the laserdisc game into a movie:

Nostalgia is nice and all, but I'm not sure the dumb-knight-rescues-princess routine would translate well in modern times.

As much as I loved the game (even on the Amiga, which was amazing for the time), I agree that its appeal will probably be limited today. Even I actually preferred Space Ace back in the 80s.

I always found the extreme dexterity of fingers required with exact timing of movement too much for me, and always died at least every 5 seconds.

Maybe with a movie, I might see the 'reached the end of the game alive' for the first timeĀ

Kickstarter cancelled, presumably because they didn't make half of their goal with a few days to go:

Moving to Indiegogo apparently... which I suspect is because they let you take the cash even if you don't hit your goal.

Years ago I bought the DVD version of the game. Clunky as hell. You played using the arrows on your remote and that only worked 50% of the time. One of the special features was you could just watch the whole thing play though. Think it was about 5 minutes total, if that.

The appeal of the original only really worked in arcades. I remember watching someone playing the machine in Leysdown circa 1984, and the watching crowd spilled out onto the street. The machine was a pound a co, and barely anyone lasted more than a minute.

The genre itself would never work as a specific movie, because it's been done to death countless times before. Just tacking on a semi-familiar branding is a sure-fire way to get the purists on your back. Just look what happened to Dungeons & Dragons
