Remakes

Snaps (Elite) posted this on Friday, 17th April 2015, 08:56

Any older films you'd actually like to see someone have another go at rather than all the raked over franchises wringing the last few dollars out of an idea?

A favourite of mine from 1957 Night of the Demon.
As long as they keep the atomsphere up and don't go mad on the CGI.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

Well they actually made a total mess of the remake DVD of Studio Ghibli's famous 'Laputa - The Castle in the Sky' (Remake: as in everything except the visuals).

I have the English version of it on VHS it was just perfect. One of the best ever films to come from Studio Ghibli.

Now on DVD they have used new voices for the main characters and it is just not the same, plus they have messed around with the music score, and again ruined it.

I do not know why they could change a perfectly goods classic Japanese film like that. I just dig out my old VHS player when I want to watch it now.

That's not remaking it, that's just changing the dub, which isn't the original language track any way you look at it. Miyazaki also approved Joe Hisaishi's musical changes and the other stuff. I'm led to believe a lot of it was removed for the US BD release, but not the UK, Australian and Japanese discs. Not sure I'd be listening to a classic Japanese film in English anyway...

Speaking of Joe Hisaishi, I love his Techno Police 21C score. Kinda wish that film would get a Blu-ray release, although I do have a copy I managed to download from YouTube (it's the English dub, but I grew up watching that).

Thanks, I will check out the Australian DVD version to see if it is still as the original English dub VHS tape version, when  I am back in Oz.

Sorry I am not a purist of listening to the story in Japanese with subs, Same goes for 'Spirited away' which is another Ghibli classic. I just like it in English.

I think The Blob is due another remake! Both the original and the 80s version were fun, but it still has room for improvement. :)

Also there was a cool black and white horror film which I think was a period piece involving a dead and buried witch that comes back to life, which I have no idea what it was called, but might be fun.

Instantly bought to mind Hocus Pocus (which it obviously isn't)
The whole family loved that when it came out and it's actually the reason for our cat's name 'Binx'.
Got him from the RSPCA but on count back we decided his b'day was Halloween.

There's talk of a sequel to Hocus Pocus http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/hocus-pocus-2-up-disney-4617757

I only saw it for the first time last year. I didn't twig that the blond one was SJP
