The Thing 2011

Just seen Claudia Winklepicker and Who`s he McNon-Entity talking this up on Film 2011.  Banging on about it being a remake of John Carpenter`s seminal 1982 horror of the same name, and not once mentioning the Howard Hawks original of 1951 which wipes the floor with Carpenter`s picture.  Have sent a strongly worded email (in the hope of being offered the presenting job for Film 2012). ;)

Having seen both the original b&w and Carpenter`s remake, theres no contest in my book, Carpenter`s picture wins hands down!

Perfect pace, special effects that stand up still today, just brilliant!

Not that the original wasn`t entertaining, but I know which one I`ve seen more than twice. ;)

Another vote for the carpenter version, superb movie, tho the 2011 "prequel" is also very good, but it`s a straight up monster movie rather a suspense/horror flick. Incredible special effects tho :)

Two questions:

1. Why are you watching Film 2011?
2. Why do you expect any kind of critical integrity from Claudia Winkleman?

The show is just a series of promotional puff-pieces for whatever films are out that week. It ceased to be a film review show years ago.

Both previous versions stand up.
It`s always difficult to compare an old B&W movie to a modern remake. You can never judge how well the earlier director would have made use of the more modern technology.
Purely on acting though I`d hate to have to split them.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

The new one is a prequel not a remake. It`s not actually a bad film (and there are numerous nods to the Carpenter flick), but ultimately it`s fairly pointless. Structurally it`s very similar to the Carpenter film, but with less tension, suspense, paranoia and, well you get the idea. Effects are decent enough, but not really any better than the 80s version, just slightly different as they are accomplished with CGI. Another ambiguous ending as well.

But yeah, Film 2011... I couldn`t even sit through one episode. Utter bilge. It`s more like one of those daytime magazine shows than a film review show. I never thought I`d miss Mr. Ross in anything, but even he was better than what we have now. It hasn`t been worth watching since Barry Norman jumped ship to Sky. Someone should give Kermode a prime time review show - that`s set the cat amongst the pigeons...

I have not seen the "original" one from the 50`s BUT

The new one is a prequel to the Carpenter as it is based on the Norwegian station aluded to in that one and the helicopter chasing the dog in the Carpenter "original", so think it`s fair to refer it to that one.

I had heard very bad things about the new one, but it sounds like worth a watch based on the above comments?

SPOILER:
Not really ;)  the ending shows the helicopter taking off to chase a dog, which leads directly onto the beginning of the carpentor flick (the copter pilot getting shot right at the beginning by Mr Bridges Snr)

i enjoyed it quite a lot :), but it`s not as good as the carpenter "sequel ?"

I`m referencing an earlier scene. There is sequel potential if they so desire.

Just checking IMDB for info on the original of which there is bu**er all.
Ridiculous that the only actor in it who has a publicity pic attached is The Thing itself (James Arness)
