Weren`t the laserdiscs the source of all the online rips pre-2006?

Of course, the 2006 discs were mastered from the tape masters for the laserdiscs, so presumably were a generation of digitisation fresher.

I may be wrong, but I think DTS on Blu-ray is set up so that depending on the amp reading the data, the sound mix renders as the "best option" for the amp.  I don`t have a Hi Def amp - DTS 5.1 is as good as it gets.  So when I play Blu-rays with 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 DTS mixes, they always play as DTS 5.1 (and sound fairly stonking).
DTS-HD works on a Core+Extensions principal. Basically the DTS Core (5.1) track is packaged together with the `difference` between the lossy and lossless audio track. If the receiving amp is capable of decoding the format then the full lossless audio is utilised, but if it isn`t the extension is discarded and you`re left with a 1.5Mbps DTS 5.1 track (which is still a much higher bitrate than you`ll hear in cinemas, but then so was Dolby Digital). TrueHD works slightly differently in that it the THD track is always accompanied by a hidden Dolby Digital lossy track at 640Kbps. If the amp doesn`t support THD it will switch to the lossy DD. Some distributors allow you to access this track independently of the THD track, which is why a lot of Warner discs show both formats.

That`s the very short version.

According to our sources, Disney has plans to release the original cut of the Star Wars trilogy on Blu-ray. Our sources indicate that the project has been under way for quite some time, but it’s been challenging because of some damage to the original negatives they are utilizing. The goal is to release A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of Jedi in their complete, unaltered, original form without the redone special edition SFX.

maybe this should be a poll ;) who will shout loudest the "fans" shouting

  1. Disney ripping off Star Wars fans by releasing same films again
  2. Yay, we get to see the originals
  3. I can't believe what they've done, they've messed it up again, the light sabres are the wrong shade to how I remember them 37 years ago.
  4. other

I'm torn, I like some of the redone effects, though there are a few they left which I wish they'd redone as well, and I certainly like the cleaned up existing effects. I prefer Han shooting first, and the original dying Vader actor, but I like some of the new shots too...

We need a branching blu-ray where you can pick shot-by-shot what you want.

A guy I know has made an original trilogy BD set based off of the de-specialised editions. He put the menus for the first film up on YouTube and it looks pretty great. Doubt we'll get anywhere near as much bonus content on an official release!

Does that mean the original source is the DVDs?

Nope. Well, partially... The main source is the 720p BD rips, completely re-edited and colour timed to more accurately reflect the look of the OT. The sources used for bits that aren't in the BD versions are a mixture of the HDTV versions of the SEs and the upscaled OT DVDs. The guy who made them (Harmy) did a very professional job restoring various wipes, fades etc, along with the original effects (even if that means goofs).

It's not like the Adywan version, where he made changes that he thought improved the films. This is a genuine recreation of the OT as close as he could get it. He's even included multiple audio tracks (5.1, 2.0 Surround, Mono) so you get to hear the various different voices and lines that were used for the 35mm, 70mm, home video releases etc.

The guy who's making these BDs has used those editions and improved them with menus, isolated scores, commentaries and just about every vintage Star Wars related featurette and associated footage you could ask for. He's not selling them of course, but they're a great fan project that he's going to share with a few people.

If you're interested, this highlights the work he did just for Star Wars:

There are also similar pages for Empire and Jedi.

Amazing amount of work he's put in to these. I guess he must be slightly annoyed that Disney are finally doing what Lucas swore would never be done.

Still a bit confused, where did the source for the 720 BD rips come from?
