Cloverfield

Sue Brown (Elite Donator) posted this on Wednesday, 31st December 2008, 07:01

I picked this up cheap the other day, with no real preconceived idea of how good or bad it was.

Watched it on Monday night as was blown away!

OK, so it`s unforgiveably short - the box claims about 1hr 20, but 10 mins of that is credits and the first 16 mins of the movie is character development. This gives just 55 minutes of actual action - but that action is non-stop and superb!

I was so impressed, that when the credits rolled, I immediately watched it all over again! You know a film is good when you do that. 8)

Also, the sound mix was wonderful. You HAVE to watch this movie in the full 5.1 digital surround. Without the need for spoilers, I will just say Brooklyn Bridge. Deserves an Oscar! Best use of surround sound since Saving Private Ryan in my opinion.

One really odd bit though...(spoilered)

SPOILER:
In the underground tunnel, the little creatures sounded like Spongebob Squarepants laughing - was that just me, or did anyone else spot it?

So I want to suggest that if you enjoy sci-fi or horror at all, you invest in this little gem. :)

Or even better, Dolby TrueHD 5.1 :)

Got this for Christmas - Haven`t got near the TV to watch it.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

When fishermen catch dolphin-friendly tuna, how do they know which tuna are being friendly to dolphins?

I always drag this one out whenever this film comes up. Did you see the falling object at the end?

Watched this last night on BD.
Saw the landing of `it` at the end only when the Missus spotted it and I didn`t so had to slow scan it. Very clever - and glad they used that ending other than the alternate ones.

My only nag was the continuity(sp) - SPOILER:
When they were climbing up the tower block to rescue his girlfriend - the black girl took off her high heels, next you see her with pumps on, then going back down had her high heels on again!

The `it` you speak of, is actually
SPOILER:
a satellite, owned by the company the main character is going off to japan to work for, falling to earth, and waking up the monster.

I made a video for youtube and so far it`s had nearly 40,000 views. Someone pointed out that as the object hits, you can almost hear a roar, but as the impact was so far away, the roar wouldn`t be instantaneous, so it`s probably coincidental.

Yes I did see it (the spoiler), but didn`t connect with the relevance of it.

I haven`t watched the extras disc or the commentary audio yet, so I expect I`ll learn a lot more when I get to that.

Oggie, you`re forgiven for not liking it, especially as you are now this forum`s most stoopid member by your own admission. :D No, seriously, sorry guzzling wine, should shut up before I say something I`ll regret, but we all like different things. If we didn`;t, life would be so boring. Cloverfield just clicked for me, but I know both my hubby and my dad would hate it, so you are not alone! ;)
